Hands Free Bottle

This was "recommended" to me on Amazon based on my browsing history. I thought it was a joke. Have you seen/heard of this thing?! The good reviews surprised me.

I would immediately think it's a joke as well. This seems horrible to me.

I can't link from mobile but there is also this product that keeps popping up on my Pinterest; it is like a harness for the bottle that you attach to the carseat and it hangs in baby's face for "hands-free feeding" .. I don't understand how anyone could think this is a good idea.

  • Any sort of bottle propping is unsafe. When you hold a bottle you're aware of baby taking a breath or turning a head and shift the bottle away.

When you prop a bottle, the milk just keeps flowing and can choke baby.

I hope this is a joke product, but I doubt it.

  • it's not for "propping".. it's for the baby to use it like a straw, kinda. i knew someone that used it with their twins. there are some "customer photos" on amazon to explain that a little better.

  • I saw something like this just today on a friends FB account. I was some type of pacifier attachment that had a tube attached to the bottle, and the baby drinks the milk through the pacifier? I'm not sure what I think about it.

    I second this.

The first review that popped up was a perfect example of why this product should not even be available. The mom wrote about how she would just "pop it in his mouth" and "go back to bed" for night feedings! First of all, that is not a safe way to feed your baby. Secondly, no one loves getting up multiple times a night, but I felt like night feedings were such a special bonding time, when it was dark and quiet, just DS and I. That comment just made me sad.

That person is a complete idiot. WhoTF does that?

  • My friend who had twins used this product from time to time - say, if one of the babies wanted a bottle while they were out in public.  I agree that it could be a very bad/unsafe product if used inappropriately, but she used it only as needed and it saved her!

  • Ditto PPs that a. it looks like a tragic accident waiting to happen, and b. it makes me sad to think of babies being fed without the comfort of being held. There is nothing wrong with feeding a baby with a bottle, but it doesn't negate the need for feeding time to be about bonding/closeness as much as getting the food in baby's belly.

Propping is kind of a general term used to describe an infant feeding from a bottle without an adult present to hold it. Usually the bottle is propped so it tips downwards, hence the term. This gimmick is no different in implications, only slightly different in practice.
I didn't know. Thanks for educatin'. :) I don't plan on using them.. I just thought propping was forcing the bottle downward for baby to feed.
When I saw them being use the babies were older, and sitting upright in their strollers and had enough control that they brought the nipple up to their own mouths.
But again, I didn't know what "propping" meant. Sorry for the assumption.

  • Multiples of course being an exception because dude, I can only imagine there are moments of pure fingernail survival going on there, those items are horribly sad.  Sweet Memories of holding feeding my son are the only things that keep me from wanting to sell him to the circus when he has one of his tantrums.  I would hate to not have had those moments.

Disclaimer: All opinions expressed are hyperbolic, I would never engage in the child for a trained elephant exchange mentioned above, it was a joke, if a tasteless one.

Or you pull the car over and feed your baby like a responsible driver and parent.

I agree. In my own personal experience, if we were going for a ride long enough that DS couldn't (or shouldn't) have waited until we arrived to eat, we left early. And when we were behind schedule, nothing was so important that we couldn't pull over for 15-20 minutes for DS to nurse if he was in distress.
