Baby Food Makers, Come On In

We were doing great with baby led weaning, and for the most part not offering too much mushy food, but baby was showing pouch envy.  She was literally grabbing at other babies' pouches at daycare.  I bought the Infantino Squeeze Station from Amazon a couple of weeks ago, and the day it arrived I used it immediately and loved it.  I've made twenty pouches so far.  Many good blends, but one of baby's favorite is pear, kale, zucchini, and banana.  She also really like carrot-apple, and broccoli with sweet potato.

Anyone have any good blend suggestions? Things baby loved? Things baby hated?

  • Banana and avocado was hit for us, which was great because he won't eat avocado by itself.  He also liked sweet potato and chickpeas.

I really want to start adding in more lentils, chickpeas, etc.  That's on my to-do list for this weekend.

I bought lentils but my confession is that I've never even had them so I'm putting off making them since I never have lol

We eat lots of lentils in our house, especially in Indian food and Ethiopian food (and baby has had both).  One thing that worries me though - and worries me in general with all foods - is that because of BLW, she has had seasoned food, which she loves. All the pouches I'm making aren't seasoned. I wonder if she thinks they're bland, or if the addition of fruits in many of them helps.

You guys are so advanced with baby foods! I'm still doing individual foods to find allergies. So far, N is allergic to apples. I'm going to be lurking this thread for future ideas :)

I'm less anxious this time around and thankfully we don't have histories of allergies (not that that means he can't have any).  The single foods just make it easier to know which thing caused the allergy and I guess I decided I'm willing to have to test out more than one food at a time if we suspect an allergy. There's no way you can get through every ingredient in the world before trying blends so it's just a matter of preference as to when you make the leap :)

  • I know I haven't done any blends either! All my stuff is individual I figure I would start mixing some of my individual purees.  Now I feel like I should start getting more creative!

  • So many ingredients I want to try! Do you guys used canned or dry chickpeas? I'm thinking I should just ask my mom for some of her homemade chumus and see if LO likes that.

  • Again I'm with @elmoali! We don't have any history of food allergies, aside from h being lactose intolerant, but that didn't even start until like 6 years ago. It is definitely easier with baby #2 as well.
  • Another BDTD mom who didn't worry too much about allergies.  I started gradually with food, but once it was evident the baby didn't have any allergies or sensitivities, we dove right in.  I don't offer foods with nuts, honey, shellfish, citrus, or tomato (although a little tomato in other foods I don't avoid), but other than that it's anything goes. Baby even had truffled mashed potatoes and roasted chicken the other night.

I've made sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, squash, pumpkin, apples, pears, bananas, mangos, avocado, raspberries, blueberries, and peas.

So far, she's a fruit gal - likes her pears, apples, bananas.  The raspberries and blueberries were a little tart, so she did better when I mixed them with a little apple or yogurt.

I haven't tried my Infantino yet - I'm waiting until LO eats a little bit more.  Right now, she will only take an ounce or so of baby food, so doing a whole pouch seems like a waste :)

  • We're slow to start this time because Lo is still a lot younger than most on this board but for G we/he loved green beans and applesauce and I STILL blend beets and sweet potatoes into smoothies all the time for him. Beets go well with a lot of things but I most frequently use them with berries and apples and as for sweet potatoes I put them in with berries, apples, mangoes, bananas, just about everything. I also toss chopped spinach or kale into a lot of things.
Lentils are still one of his favorites from our first food days, can't wait till this kiddo seems ready!

    What she said.

Other mixtures he likes are butternut squash and avocado; turkey and apples; and apples, sweet potatoes, and chicken. That's all we have tried so far.

We are going to do green beans, carrots, and chicken next.

ETA: Has anyone else done meats yet? We just did a turkey combo once, but today will be his fourth day with a chicken combo.

You can season them. Check this out:

What you guys are saying makes a lot of sense! There are a couple of food allergies in my family, apples being one of them. I'm lactose intolerant and am allergic to butternut squash. I've been wanting to try mixing things so now I think I'll just do it. Thanks everyone :)

I don't puree meat, but baby girl has had turkey, chicken, beef, and salmon.

We've done chicken, I usually mix it with sweet potatoes.
I'm getting inspired to try more blends though! I've been boring so far.

I puree meat in the baby bullet! Then I just mix in with his other purees. Tonight C had pork with peas and sweet potato with a little BM to make it creamy. I've also done chicken and turkey...I guess beef is next!

  • Baby A's fave at the moment is beef with parsnips and carrots. He also loved spaghetti squash with sharp cheddar grated on top.
