Poor girl

Milla was cleared to go off of her daily bactrim dose a few weeks ago. She's been on it since February.
This morning out if no where she started acting off, then threw up, then threw up again and again. That turned into bile vomit every 10 minutes or so. She was crazy lethargic, pale, absolutely no trace of her personality. It was like 15 times in a couple of hours. I called her peds office and they told me to bring her to the hospital ASAP! My friend came with me. They gave her some zofran since she couldn't stop vomiting. Then after a bit gave her 2 Popsicles, she loved them! After she kept that down I was cleared to try breast feeding. So far so good with that.
I had them check her urine and sure enough she has a really bad uti and because of the severity of her vomiting they think it has already spread to her kidney/s.
They gave her 2 shots of rocephin and she is back on the bactrim twice a day.

All of her imaging came back fine last month! I'm so frustrated, less than 3 fricken weeks without a daily antibiotic and she's crazy sick with what started the daily meds in the first place! Ugh! I am so worried about her now. Wtf is going on with her urinary tract?!
She did have diahrrea from her molars, maybe it's all coincidental.

Oh and a male nurse gave her a teddy bear, I think she fell in love. She actually fluttered her eyes at him! It was adorable.

Re: Poor girl

  • Aw poor thing, I hope she feels better soon. Those rocephin shots should def help fast though. I had one shot after a kidney infection I got postpartum with dd and I felt so much better. That is such a bummer that she is still getting the UTI's though. I hope things get better and that is so cute about the teddy bear.

  • Thanks! By bed time she seemed normal and was starving. I only let her have a banana, Cheerios, and an eggo. She ate a little of each and tried to steal my whopper.

I was relieved when they said they'd be giving her rocephin, it's potent!

  • Glad that Milla is much better! Recall you mentioning that she was prone to them for physical reasons (can't recall the exact diagnosis she got last year), but do they have any additional reccomendations for reducing the likely hood of the UTIs? (Am just thinking of adults being able to take the Cranberry capsules & am guessing she'a too young for that to be an option)

Guess it only takes a bit of the bacteria to take effect...

She has a labial adhesion, it's mostly gone now. What is still attached isn't enough to cause issues.

In thinking about cranberries some how!

Glad to hear Milla is starting to feel better.  I'm not sure if you're looking for advice but I agree with PPs that you might want to add cranberries into her diet.  Yogurt, garlic, and onions are good for fighting bad bacteria in the body.  Also, blueberries/blueberry juice is supposed to help with UTIs too.

I hope you/Milla's doctors can find a way to eliminate her UTIs without having to rely on daily antibiotics.  Out of curiosity, have her doctors screened her for immune deficiency or checked her urinary tract/kidneys/bladder for abnormalities?
They did the reflux X-ray and several ultrasounds on her. I'm sure her dr will call today since he was pretty worried yesterday, I'll ask him about the immune thing.

  • Oh Poor baby. Antibiotics can throw off the balance of her gut. Have you considered probiotics? Hope they figure out the cause soon.

Surprisingly she's never had tummy troubles from the abx. I am interested in giving her probiotics though. I just don't know what's safe or recommended.
