STM/outside baby advice/perspective needed!!

Ok ladies....so my LO is 1 week old and I am asking for advice/perspective/experiences from some other mommies before I lose my cool. I am a STM, but DD is almost 8 and I feel like such a newbie!!

The issues:

1. LO is SOOOO sleepy! And by sleepy I mean awake for 20 minutes at the most, then back to sleep for at least a couple of hours. I honestly don't remember how long the sleepy phase lasts.

2. I am EBF, and am just getting past some latching issues. Now I find that LO only wants to feed for like 5 minutes at a time! She either falls asleep, at which point I try ALL of the nagging mommy tricks to wake her up, she will suckle a few times, then be out again. Or she ends up choking on the milk, so I set her up to let her catch her breath, and then she becomes completely uninterested in latching on again. I am so worried that she is not getting enough, and I feel like she never empties the breast and I'm afraid it will compromise my supply.

3. When my boobs do fill with milk again, they hurt SOOOO bad! Like a burning hurt! I don't ever remember that being painful.

I've tried communicating with the LC at the hospital about the BF issues, but do not feel supported by her at all!! I feel like a burden each time I talk to her.

I'm really trying not to let my anxiety get the best of me, but it is so hard not to worry!

TIA for your responses! Many hugs and love to all of you!

  • Which tricks have you tried to wake her up? With DS I remember removing layers (even getting down to just diaper if necessary), using a washcloth on his face gently, stroking his cheek.

If your letdown is forceful, you can try unlatching her quickly and letting some spray into a towel or washcloth. It tends to piss them off, but may be better than her choking on it. Your supply should regulate in time too.

I was PAINFULLY engorged with DS, I think in part because the nurses in the hospital had me pumping while I was still there (for no good reason, DS was latching and nursing like a champ!). I remember taking a hot hot shower while trying to hand express to take the edge off, and still needing ibuprofen for the pain.

  • Tricks I've tried: stripping baby down, turning the ceiling fan on, changing positions, tickling body parts, blowing on baby, wet washcloth
  • Thanks for the feedback!
  • Chiming in from F14, could you try to find a different LC? You need someone that is going to be nothing but supportive! And I second the letting down into a towel, I had a forceful let down with my first as well and I had to do that for a while til she got a little bigger and had more control / was able to handle my supply.
