Play doh

Do you think our LOs are too young for play doh? We got a toddler table for Christmas and I am trying to think of items to put on the table. Jeffrey likes playing with crayons so I have a box of that and some coloring sheets so far.

  • it's for ages 2 and up, according to the manufacturer. i'd be worried about them eating it or choking on a ball of it.

i saw something making the rounds recently about making play sand- you mixed 4 cups of whole wheat flour and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. it's moldable, like wet sand, but you can't really roll it into a ball.

i was thinking about making that for DS. i'd rather have him eat that than play-doh. ;)
  • Charlotte would eat it.  She's JUST starting to understand that crayons are not food, and even then, she gets bored with coloring and starts to eat them.

    Maybe she just has pica?
  • I made some a couple of months ago and DD didn't even want to touch it, didn't like the texture. Just as well, I can put off the mess of dried playdough in everything for a while longer

  • We try it every once and a while. He's not super into it and doesn't really get the concept. He likes to watch me mush it and stuff though. I think 2 is probably when he will really enjoy it.

This is us, too. I really have to watch him with crayons.

DS saw DD's play doh out the other day, grabbed a bucket, took it over to his spot at the table and started to climb into his high chair to play with it. I almost caved, but I know all he will do is eat it right now, so I took it away.

We started to let DD have play doh right around 2, but she was far less apt to put things in her mouth than DS is.

  • I'm going to wait a bit. I know he will eat it. I had to take his crayon table away for now because he was munching on them
