Baby led weaning question

DH and I have been feeding J rice cereal and oatmeal. We've recently tried giving her bananas, carrots, and apples all puréed with our baby bullet. I've seen that some of you are doing baby led weaning, and I do apologize if this has been brought up already, but DH and I were unsure about it. We've seen some things on the internet about giving the baby food to eat themselves and we weren't sure how the baby doesn't choke on the food.
We may be totally thinking about this the wrong way, but we're just wanting some input about it as our dr hasn't mentioned it and we've only been led to believe to give her rice cereal and oatmeal first. TIA

Eta to add that with the puréed foods, she hasn't been really into it, so we've been sticking with the rice cereal.

Re: Baby led weaning question

  • I'm curious about blw too. I tried giving J some banana slices but he didn't even try to grab them. So I ended up putting them in a bowl to mash and spoon feed.

  • Baby's gag reflex is further up in their mouth to help prevent choking. Choking is still possible so you need to watch baby. I think depending on your pedi you may get mixed responses on whether it is safe or not. Ours doesn't recommend it because of the choking hazard and suggested waiting till closer to 9months. I don't handle the gagging well so we are doing mostly purées with the occasional BLW!

  • We've been doing a mix - do far no gagging with BLW! We've only given him very soft food though, and he tends to smash it even more before eating it. Baked sweet potato wedges have been a favorite, and seem to work the best. Bananas are also good, and avocado. I tried baked apples but they didn't get as soft. It is messy! I think that we will prob stick with puréed food at daycare (although they are open to the idea of BLW), and do more of the BLW food at home.
