3rd Trimester

Waking up frequently with sore hips...ouch! :(

My left hip feels like it's out of the joint and scraping around in there this morning. (it's not.) I have been waking up a lot more often with sore hips, which is probably due to the fact that I'm in my last trimester and baby is getting chunky! I work full time, so having sore hips makes the work day even harder. I'm on my feet a decent amount of time, but nothing excessive. I sit when I can. I already walk with a waddle, so a waddle-limp is definitely not ideal!  Anybody have any remedies they use to help the pain, or ways to prevent it?  Both SI joints in my back are jammed, so I would appreciate it if the rest of my body would give me a break. :/

  • Chiro really helped me when I got to that point.  Sitting on an exercise ball also really helped when I had to sit - sitting is actually bad for your back believe it or not!  Doing some stretching and yoga can help as well - you want to make sure you leg muscles are loose; yoga has some great hip opening poses that help a ton.

  • I had this exact same issue. I had to buy a new mattress! One of those ones with tons of pillow top. We needed one anyway, so it worked out. But I would recommend buying a mattress topper, the thickest one you can find. Or a duvet and folding it over to make some cushion and sleep on that. Also, sleep with a thick pillow between your knees if you aren't already doing so. It helps to keep your pelvis aligned through the night.

My hips used to feel bruised all day every day from sleeping and now the problem is gone.

    Good luck!

  • Yes I have had the same problem for weeks now. I've been stretching everyday and sleep with a pillow between my legs. Seems to help but I still have to turn every hour. :(.
  • I find that stretching and a warm compress helps me... usually, anyway. Sometimes it just lasts all day and nothing works. :( I feel your pain, mama! Also, be aware of your posture while sitting because it can make all the difference.

  • I sleep with a snoogle between my knees and have moved to the couch- even with a feather bed on top of my matress it was too firm. Good luck!
  • I've experienced this with both of my pregnancies. I found temporary relief with a chiropractor and some stretches they showed me, but it wore off around the 6th or 7th month. My next try is to sleep with a heating pad if I can find the damn thing.

FWIW, I tried a really nice pillow top mattress cover and it didn't help much. I do find that the couch (with it's 8" cushions) is much more comfortable on my hips, but all the other things that make a couch uncomfortable are still present. I usually enjoy the first 5 hours in my bed, then when I start to wake up at 45 minute intervals, I go to the couch. On days that my husband loves me and lets me sleep in, I'm able to go back to the bed with slightly rejuvenated hips and enjoy another solid 90-120 minutes of sleep. Sleeping with a body pillow that goes between my knees AND allows me to throw an arm over it, is absolutely necessary.

Good luck! And I hope to God your doctor doesn't laugh when you complain and say, "It will prepare you for those sleepless nights." If I could punch someone in the face everytime that was the response, I'd be a champion boxer.
