I went in for my routine appointment yesterday. My OB's office tends to have a fair amount of nursing/med/ nurse practicioner students. It is all kind of old hat by now. They always ask if it is ok for a student to come in. Up until now there has never been an issue. The student found baby's heartbeat on doppler then measured my belly. When we were chatting about how far along I am she turned to me and said "now your file says you are having a boy right?" She said boy with heavy question and when I told her that we do not know we are waiting to be surprised she had the deer in the headlights look and then stammered for a minute. She then proceeded to tell me that she always just assigns a gender and that she should check the file more closely to see if parents want to know. I do know that the gender is noted in the file due to anatomy scan and such. My nurse told me that it is done in such a way that I would never see it on the open file but staff would be able to acess it. I am just glad that DH was not at the appointment because he would have been very upset to find out in such a way. I have to say that although I wanted to know in the beginning, I am a bit upset to think that I might know now. I liked the idea of us being surprised. I know it is not the same as seeing the u/s or being told directly but I am still a bit sad. I had decided I liked the idea of a surprise. Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else?
