Pregnant after 35

I think a med student revealed the sex of our baby :(

I went in for my routine appointment yesterday.  My OB's office tends to have a fair amount of nursing/med/ nurse practicioner students.  It is all kind of old hat by now.  They always ask if it is ok for a student to come in.  Up until now there has never been an issue.  The student found baby's heartbeat on doppler then measured my belly.  When we were chatting about how far along I am she turned to me and said "now your file says you are having a boy right?"  She said boy with heavy question and when I told her that we do not know we are waiting to be surprised she had the deer in the headlights look and then stammered for a minute.  She then proceeded to tell me that she always just assigns a gender and that she should check the file more closely to see if parents want to know.  I do know that the gender is noted in the file due to anatomy scan and such.  My nurse told me that it is done in such a way that I would never see it on the open file but staff would be able to acess it.  I am just glad that DH was not at the appointment because he would have been very upset to find out in such a way.  I have to say that although I wanted to know in the beginning, I am a bit upset to think that I might know now. I liked the idea of us being surprised.  I know it is not the same as seeing the u/s or being told directly but I am still a bit sad.   I had decided I liked the idea of a surprise.  Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else?

  • I'm so sorry this happened to you. DH and I are team green as well and this has been a huge fear of mine. All of my OB appts. have been with the same doctor but I have had different nurses and different ultrasound techs. I make sure to tell everyone first thing at any appt. that we are not finding out the gender before we start anything. I even tell my doctor (who probably already knows) but I figure he sees lots of women so he may forget my specifics.

I wish I had told her, just didn't think I would need to :(  Our Dr and his 2 nurses know and we have told u/s techs upon going into the room.

Thank you.  No, I am going to keep it to myself.  I really don't want to spoil it for him.  That is the one thing he has asked for.  We have had a sealed envelope with the u/s pic so we could have found out anytime.  I want him to have his moment of surprise and be able to share it with family so I will keep it to myself as hard as that may be :(

I got told on Saturday we went to an independant place because I wanted to check fingers and toes. I said 3 times to the TECH do NOT tell us the sex of the baby.In the room!! She and the receptionist HAD to see what we were having. There was NO reason for this!! I had scans at the hospital about 7 weeks before. I am 27 weeks now. She slipped up and said the words Sweet Son! This is our first child! She tried to back peddle and say she was talking about her child. I wrote a review on Yelp and got slammed back by the owner and the tech. Of course the Tech is going to lie and say she didn't say it. I told her when we were there she said it. Then I told the owner, she said she talked to the tech. Owner took the tech side. So what do they do slam me back on YELP. Talk about mature!! I have been crying pretty much non stop since Saturday!! This is our first and maybe ONLY child. I wanted that surprise of It's a ---------------. I am really upset. So I paid $45 dollars to find out something I didn't want to know!! SO ANGRY! I am so sorry that this happened to you. I feel your pain. Just think of the wonderful baby that you will be holding soon. I know it's not what you wanted but you will love the baby.

  • I'm so sorry she did that.  I can tell you this... my good friend had a very similar situation and was told on 3 seperate occasions she was having a boy.  Guess what?  She had a girl!  I'm not sure how often THAT happens, but until that LO arrives on the scene, you just never know!
