Her Rash Was Folliculitis!

A while ago I posted about a weird diaper rash that DD had. I thought I had seen every diaper rash imaginable but apparently not. It was a rash that looked kinda like acne bumps. A red swollen pore with a whitehead on it, but all over her diaper area and a little bit on her tummy and legs. I thought that it was a bad reaction to the wipes or detergent we were using, or she had gotten sand in her diaper from the playground and it irritated her... Who knows. I called her pedi and they told us to try a million different things that never worked. Everything from colloidal oatmeal baths to expensive creams. Poor DD has been in pain this whole time. We took her to the pedi today and after looking at it the pedi said it was folliculitis. An infection of the hair follicle. The pedi says its common. She said that bacteria loves urea and could have infected her hair follicle while wearing a diaper. Soo glad we are potty training now. She gave her antibiotics which she said will clear it up. I wish we had just taken her instead of calling and trying so many things. But I'm glad we have the issue resolved now.

Has your LO ever had a similar rash? Other than the antibiotics was there anything you did to soothe it topically which helped?

Re: Her Rash Was Folliculitis!

  • My daughter has not had it but now that you mention it I may take her to get her diaper rash checked out. Hadn't thought of that as an option. I have had folliculitis twice due to my razor sitting in the shower too long. They gave me amoxicillin and it cleared up quickly. It was not painful. Maybe a little itchy from time to time but I would imagine your child hardly notices it. A little diaper cream should help with chaffing on such a sensitive area.
