LO has RSV :( UPDATE.

edited January 2014 in December 2013 Moms
This all started Saturday night with a little cough and a bit of nasal congestion.  DD1 had been sick the week prior and we tried our best to get her to cover her cough and keep her hands clean but she's 2 and that was a tough task.  DH & I also came down with a cold.

Each day that went by, it was apparent LO was getting worse.  She had an appt with her pedi this morning and she tested positive for RSV.  Her respirations were elevated and her pulse ox was slightly lowered.  No fever but having a tough time breastfeeding.  She's admitted for the night and is getting breathing treatments every 4 hours.

This momma's sad and feeling pretty helpless.  I just want to make my baby feel better.  DD1 was never sick as a baby and she was a preemie (how ironic) so this is a new feeling for me.  Our goal is no oxygen needed and to be home tomorrow.  T&Ps would be appreciated.

And please, ladies, it's that time of year.  If at anytime your newborn comes down with a cold and you feel something just isn't right, do not delay taking LO in.  Better safe than sorry!

UPDATE:

LO got to come home yesterday afternoon..so only a one night stay in the hospital (still too long)!  The doctor said for only being 4 weeks old, that she was handling the illness very well.  Her appetite is back and she is breathing better.  We were sent home with a nebulizer for breathing treatments and amoxicillin for her ear infection.  Her cough is already improving.  I am relieved and anxiously waiting for her to be 100% better.  She has a follow up appointment with the pedi on Monday.  I am assuming she's over the worst of it since today is day 6 of the illness.

We are on day 4 at the hospital with my 7 week old, he got RSV from DS1 who is 3. it's barely been a month since we left the NICU where he stayed for 10 days (he was born a 34 weeks), I'm beyond bummed & feel your pain...

I hope the virus clears up faster for you than it has for us, I was just telling DH how this hospitalizations has been harder on me than when LO was in NICU...

So sorry to hear this.  It is definitely hard.  There's not much that feels worse than this helpless feeling of not being able to make you child feel better.  Hope your LO is home soon, too.

  • Thank you, everyone.  We've had 2 breathing treatments so far and a dose of antibiotics for her ear.  She's sleeping a lot and not emptying my boobs when she eats so I'm engorged and without my pump.  Boooo.

She's not doing any worse so that's a positive.

And here's a couple AW pics...one peaceful moment and one pissed off moment.

@hjweber, ask the hospital to supply a pump. I've heard they will if your baby has to stay overnight. doesn't hurt to ask. Thinking of you both!

    True!  Worth a shot.

Definitely this if they extend your stay. We have a pump in the room, breastfeeding would have gone down the drain otherwise. LOs get tired from fighting off the virus and the breathing treatments makes mine lethargic too, so nursing has been challenging. I've just been pumping after feedings and they save it for me in their freezer to take home.

  • My baby has RSV too. It's miserable! I am managing it at home though. I borrowed a nebulizer from my friend and bought a snot sucker nasal aspirator, which works great. We are on day 3 and I am praying he starts to get better today. Yay for no fevers!

Thinking of you and your little one, hope you can come home today! Cheers to no sleep!

  • @hjweber how much is your LO eating? Mine is FF and is eating 1-2oz every 4 hours overnight and I wake him up and offer him milk every 2 hours in the day. Yesterday was ok but today he's coughing, crying and sleeping. Sigh.
  • Poor little babe! Thinking of you guys.

  • @Lmsr17, I am not sure how much she was eating or eats because she is BF.  She can drink up to 3oz of pumped milk from a bottle.  But she was only nursing for a minute or two before coming unlatched and getting fussy because she was either too stuffy or coughing too bad or just not feeling well in general.

  • @hjweber thank you :) so glad to hear LO is better and home! We ended up in the hospital on Thursday evening with LO having retractions and wheezes. He's doing much better now, but still here going on day 2. No one is visiting my house until the baby is 1! lol :)

I understand.  I'll punch a bitch if they come around my babies sick after seeing my newborn sick like that.  Her cough still makes me cringe even though it's getting better.
Your LO is in the best place possible for the situation.  At least you can be with him while he's there, ya know?  Is he on oxygen?
T&P and fingers crossed that he's even better tomorrow and can come home sooner rather than later.

  • @hjweber thank you for the creepy Internet hugs, I need all the hugs I can get. LO was doing good yesterday during the day requiring no oxygen for most of the day (he's been on 28% on and off) but last night he got so much more congested and started wheezing again. He got a couple of treatments and gets frequently suctioned but he still sounds so junky. :( I hoped we would go home today but that's defiantly not happening. I may be here a few more days. How's your LO? How long has he been sick? We are on day 6 so I hope he turns around today. He is defiantly in the best place and I'm ok with it, I just feel horrible for my sick with RSV 2 year old that is screaming for his mommy all day while I'm gone :( breaks my heart, wish I could be in 2 places at once. Sigh.

Oh man.  That is tough.  My 2 yo DD was sick first in our home (I know that's how LO got sick) and I felt bad because I kept yelling at her to cover her mouth and to get out of her sisters face.  It didn't help.  LO got sick anyways, as did DH  & I.  Now that DD1 is feeling better, I feel guilty for not cuddling her more while she wasn't feeling good.  :(  I learned my lesson for next time.

My LO is on day 6 of the illness and is doing much better.  I've been giving breathing treatments every 4 hours during the day and that has helped so much.  She's a lot less irritable, too.  Sounds like your LO is on his way to coming home even though it's so frustrating at this point.  Fingers crossed tomorrow is even better than today.
