Re: Double FMLA time for twins??

  • I wish. I tried to convince my work to give me 12 weeks paid instead of the six we get but they didn't go for it.

  • Not sure. I've never heard of anyone getting double time, but I have heard of getting extra time when NICU stays are involved.
  • That would have been nice. I ended up taking 15 weeks.

  • FMLA is a federal benefit, the same no matter what state you live in. You get 12 weeks protected time off per year, not per event (or per baby in your case.) Your state might have laws concerning parental or medical leave that would give you more time off, but it would be different from FMLA.

  • Not under FMLA, but perhaps MA has a state law with different provisions.

MA has a state provision separate from FMLA. I think it is eight weeks of unpaid leave/job protection that you are allowed to double for twins. Like FMLA there are requirements to qualify (I didn't because my employer is in VT) for this so check with HR and read up on the law.

ETA: I don't think the 8/16 weeks counts in addition to FMLA, they have to run concurrently in most cases. Again, check the law and see if it applies in your case.

  • I think @MaiTaiBeth said something about getting more time for having twins, but I think it was 16 weeks, not 24.

  • I only get 12 weeks FMLA but am taking 22 weeks. It will be unpaid and I have already spoken to my boss about taking extra time.

  • I believe it's 16w in MA. Look up the MMLA, not FMLA.

    See question 6.
  • In MA it's 8 weeks per child, though your FMLA runs concurrent to your MMLA.
