Gender Ultrasound--22 weeks?!

I just got back from my 16 weeks check up. I was hoping to schedule my u/s today... But my doc said she won't schedule it until a whopping 22 weeks!! Is this normal or is she just covering herself? Are there any other options to find out ahead of time? I'm dyin over here!

Re: Gender Ultrasound--22 weeks?!

  • That does seem a little late. You could always pay for an elective u/s if you don't want to wait to find out the sex.

  • Ill be 20 weeks when I find out
  • I paid for an elective ultrasound. They told me at 15wks and it came with a beautiful DVD of our scan matched up to a playlist of songs we chose. :)
Thats an option if you don't want to wait for the Dr.'s visit. Plus I would've never gotten a DVD from my doc. LoL
  • I'm in the same boat. I'm now 17 weeks! When I went to my 16 week appointment my doctor was very adamant about me waiting until I was 20 weeks. I have an appointment for a 19 week check up and it will be scheduled then. I get the feeling that I'll be waiting another four weeks after that appointment. It's driving me crazy and I'm so ready to find out my baby's gender. I'm thinking she wants to do the anatomy scan and gender at the same time, I guess that why she's making me wait. Maybe that's what your doctor is doing also!
  • That does seem a little late - usually it's closer to 20 weeks, but I've seen anywhere between 18-22 weeks on here for the a/s.  And just so you know most can actually tell earlier - I know several people who found out around 12 weeks and it was accurate.  But some places won't tell you just to cover their butts in case they're wrong.  You could always schedule an elective u/s before that if you wanted, but you might have to pay OOP.

  • My OB is scheduling mine for 22weeks as well!! I can't wait that long, so tmw at my 16 week appt I am going to try & sweet talk her into an earlier one. It prob won't work, but I'm gonna try!

  • I was supposed to have a 17 week belly checkup but ended up having to go in early because I was having spleen issues and ended up needing an MRI. If I had stuck with that checkup my a/s would have been another 4 weeks after (my office generally wants to see me once a month so unless something is wrong they won't do earlier) and I would have had to wait until 21 weeks. The only benefit to the spleen issue was I had to be seen unexpectedly at 15 weeks and so they changed my a/s to 19 weeks :) So we'll get to see baby earlier than expected- next week! I guess it just depends on what your dr office does and how often they want you to come in. I've read that anywhere from 18-22 weeks is normal for the a/s.
  • PPs said it for me, but it bears repeating, there is no such thing as a gender ultrasound unless you pay for it yourself.  An anatomy scan/fetal survey (I've seen it called both) is to check baby's growth, movement, weight, development, heart, lungs, brain, etc.  It's about the health of your baby.  They only tell you the gender because they are looking around in there anyway.  18-22 weeks is normal for the AS, so you're not late.  I know it sucks to have to wait, but finding out the gender is not the doc's primary concern.

  • I have my anatomy scan tomorrow and I'll be 19 weeks 1 day. Finding out the sex is a bonus and not what you're really there for. They are looking to see how the baby is developing.
  • Thanks!! I know/understand that the reason for the ultrasound is not all about finding the gender... Just a piece of it. I am just antsy to start buying and decorating a nursery (which, also, I know CAN be done without knowing the gender). I just thought 22 weeks was a touch on the late side.
  • I just think it's mean, is all, to make you wait longer! Plain mean!

  • I'll be seen for regular appointment next Monday during week 17, they'll do a quick in house US to look for heartbeat since mine doesn't show on the Doppler. Then I'll go again for anatomy scan and next OB appointment at 22 weeks. I see my doctor every 4 weeks and started on an odd week. They tried for week 21, but the US clinic was booked. So if baby cooperates, I'll know February 13th. At week 13 baby was chilling out with its feet crossed at the ankles.

  • We had our a/s yesterday. And yes, it was great finding out we have a baby boy, but now we have to go back for another a/a bc baby was too small to measure some things they need to measure. Yes I love seeing him in an ultrasound, but now I have to miss work again.
  • For DS mine was at 21 weeks. I think it's normal and they'll be able to see the development even better since baby will be a little bigger.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • My anatomy scan will be between 20-21 weeks provided my appointments stay on track.  The only reason that my doctor would perform an earlier ultrasound at my next appointment (16 weeks) is if they are not able to pinpoint/measure the baby's heartbeat on the Doppler, which was what happened with my son (he was moving around too much for them to get a lock on his heartbeat with the Doppler).

  • My doctor's office does the anatomy scan between 20 and 24 weeks. Mine will probably be around 21 almost 22 weeks.
  • Ill be right at 21 weeks for mine...
    Same for me.

  • I am 19 weeks right now and get my ultrasound on the 22nd of this month. I will be 21 weeks. My wont won't let you schedule them till 20 weeks at least unless she thinks its needed. I think I was 22weeks with my third when I found out. This is my fourth.
  • I'll be a couple days shy of 21 weeks when I have my A/S later this month. It's the latest I've ever received one, but my midwife likes them to be done no earlier than 20 weeks. She feels the clearest results are after that point.

  • I will more than likely be between 21-22 weeks for my a/s. I hate that I have to wait that long but the way my appointments are falling, I won't have my 16 week checkup until I am 17w1d. I hate having to wait so long!

  • I was told as early as 18 weeks, but the place i'm going doesn't have any openings till I'm just over 20 weeks. I was hoping they had something sooner, but they did put us on the notice list if any appointments get moved or canceled and they have an opening.
