Crib bumpers, can someone clear this up for me?

I was picking out my crib bedding set on BRU website and I found one I really liked and so I looked at the comments from other buyers and one woman's comment was how she loved that it didn't come with the bumpers because having them in the crib increases the risk for SIDS? I guess i've never heard of that before but I was just curious if anyone else had heard of this or knows what she's talking about?

Ugh, I just went through the same thing! If you google crib bumper safety, the reviews are crazy. I did a lot of research and honestly don't know that I believe all the hooplah, but ended up going with a mesh bumper just because I couldn't handle the idea of using a regular one after I read the safety reviews. However, my sister and friends have all had bumpers, and I don't think that's a bad decision either! Do your research but beware of google...it's scary!

  • I got a set with bumpers but no dust ruffle ( skirt ) so I'm using the bumpers for that purpose.
  • I buy them but I didn't start using them with DD until she was about 11 months. That's when she started moving all over the place and would bump her head on crib and wake up crying. At that point I put them in and she's 18 months and they are still in. We'll be using them until we move her to toddler bed. I don't recommend using with a baby but as they get older I think it's fine.

  • What others have said -- bumpers are a major no-no. We never even did mesh ones because DD (who rolls all over the place to this day) never seemed bothered by bumping her head (and I don't think mesh bumpers really provide any padding anyhow), and there was only one instance in which she got a limb stuck and needed us to help her.

The issue w/ older kids is that they can sometimes use them to get a few extra inches when trying to climb out of the crib. Again, I have no experience b/c we didn't use them, but it can be a concern.

They fold right in half. If DD were to climb out of crib she'd get put with or without bumpers. Luckily she's never tried to climb out yet :)

  • So
    Glad
I read this! I had no idea!!! And am buying our bedding tomorrow!
  • We used a mesh one after a while because DD has a soother at night in her crib, and will wake up and grab it and go back to sleep. Without the mesh bumper, it would sometimes fall out of the crib, resulting in us having to go in and find it in the dark. I know I know, soothers are a WHOLE other can of works. But yes, we used (and still have) a mesh bumper and it has been just fine. I still hear her whack her head every now and then so I dont know that it does anything for that :)

  • PBK will not even sell them in our state anymore due to new regulations. They came with DS's set but we took them out once he was born so it was prettyuch a waste of $.

  • Thank you so much ladies, I can't believe I had no idea!

    This is what we did.

  • We didn't use any bumpers until around 6 or 7 months. I was having to go in DS's room several times a night to either get the paci off the floor or get one of his limbs out of the slats. We use the mesh ones.
  • We used them when the kids are older and their long skinny limbs kept getting caught in the crib slats.

They really are rather uneccesary, even if they weren't a suffocation risk. I know some people say they need them to keep limbs in the crib but I don't think that's an issue for all kids, just some.
If I had a kid that was rolling both ways and was in the 6 month plus range, I'd probably be okay with the mesh ones, but only if the limbs getting stuck was a regular occurance.

Honestly, even with the limb issue - both my kids do this - they still get stuck even with the bumpers. We have mesh bumpers in DD's crib and she's constantly pushing them down and getting her knee stuck over top of the bumper. Even mesh bumpers aren't really necessary. We had regular bumpers in DS' crib for awhile and he did the same thing. We eventually took his out and then afterward read about the increases SIDS risk so we went with mesh with DD. but yeah, they never stay in place and legs still get wedged.

  • I never used them with DD. She often has an arm or leg through the slats in her crib but I only know this because I have a video monitor. I have never had to go in and help her she just eventually changes position and pulls her arm back in. She has never gotten stuck.
  • My mom, whose job is to inspect family daycares, says to picture a vacuum above the crib sucking everything out but baby. NO blankets, comforters, animals, bumpers. Just baby and a sleep sack, though I can see the mesh ones to save pacifiers from falling being used at certain ages!

My 2 year old, of course did not get this memo as his bed is now filled with "friends" lol but he's older.

  • I'm an interior designer and most of my interior designer friends always do bumpers (and really pricey custom made ones). They are gorgeous, but I'm choosing not to do them. It's just not worth the cost, especially since they aren't 100% safe. I will play devils advocate and say that I did read that they help make baby feel more "womb-like" and helps them sleep better which I thought was interesting. (I'm still not using them though)

  • I have no idea while they are still on the market. I'm certainly not using a traditional one, maybe a breathable one if I need it down the road.

  • We had them, but DS never slept in his crib until he was almost 14 months old so they were for aesthetics only and now to keep him from pushing his binky out in his sleep.  We'll get a set for this baby for the same reason.  I wouldn't use them with a newborn though, definitely not until they can roll on their own both ways.
