Mirrors in the car?

Are you ladies using mirrors in the car so you can see baby when he or she is rear facing ?

When we had our car seat inspected they told us it was a bad idea bc in the event of a crash it could come loose and hit the baby.

But it's really hard to not be able to see her ! I just took her out for the first time on my own and I was pretty nervous even though it was a short ride.

What's the consensus ?

Re: Mirrors in the car?

  • We decided not to use them, due to the safety concerns.

Although for me personally, I have bad vision, so I would be trying to focus to see the baby in the mirror and probably end up crashing my car...so that was another reason we decided not to use them lol.

  • I'm using them. I got ones with soft sides. It's worth it to me to be able the babies. Car seat tester also said to buckle in bags and not to use coffee cups in the car.

  • ahh I hadn't thought about the safety concern :(  I have one!
  • Hah so we had a mirror, but during the day I have a swaddle blanket over the seat so the sun isn't in his eyes and at night you can't see him anyway. So it was a big fail. It also takes up an extra seat.
yeah I have a carseat cover over our carseat too, haha.  So I don't actually get to "see" LO with it yet, lol, but I figure eventually when I don't cover her it'll be useful.
  • No mirrors. As the car seat safety tech said they are not recommended. The only things in our back seats are the car seats.
  • No mirror. I had one for a week with DS1 and I threw it away because I kept looking at him. Too dangerous!
  • We have one. I never thought about the safety concern with it. Something to consider.

I feel like this is one of those instances where this safety concern is a bit of overkill. The chances of getting hit hard enough to unvelcro AND unclip the mirror (most have both) and then have it fly into the car seat seems pretty slim. Not to mention those mirrors are so light, flimsy and covered with material all around the edges. I could understand the concern of distracted driving by looking back though. JMO

  • We have one but rarely do I look back.

  • I'm usually all about safety recs, but we had a mommy mirror while DS1 was rear facing and now we're using it for DS2. I don't find myself distracted nor am I more worried about the flying mirror than I am the flying toy car or woody doll that DS1 must have with him at all times.

  • Nope. My eyes need to be on the road. If she's making a suspicious noise I'll pull over. Similar reason to not text and drive. It just takes a second to not be paying attention.
  • I have one and I love it! It's even good when my DH is driving and I am next to him. I haven't thought of the safety issues, maybe that's something for me to think about
  • Nope didn't get one because I know I'd be looking back too much.

  • If a child is truly choking, meaning not getting air, you won't hear them. Regardless, I look back often... Rear view mirror? Not gawking but looking... I glance at them all in the rear view mirror. It is called common sense, don't look back for fifteen minutes!
    As if everybody has that.
  • We have one but not so much to see little one because I am more focused on the road and other drivers but ours is for entertainment purposes when DS gets older. It plays music and has little lights in the mirror.
