cut off date for travel by plane?

hey ladies,

understanding of course, that everyone's pregnancies are different and need to be assessed case-by-case, i was wondering what week you were told to stop flying.

we are trying to plan a quick jaunt for our 10 yr wedding anniversary before bonusbaby arrives and i am waiting to hear back from my doc. online said usually 36wks, but i think that seems late...

thanks!

Re: cut off date for travel by plane?

  • Check with the airline because they can vary.

  • I think each airline has their own policy. For example, here's Delta's:
Delta does not impose restrictions on flying for pregnant women, so a medical certificate is not required to travel. Keep in mind, however, that ticket change fees and penalties cannot be waived for pregnancy. If you're traveling after your eight month, it's a good idea to check with your doctor to be sure travel is not restricted.
  • I work for a major airline....most have some number like 34-39 weeks, and then they say they require a note from your doctor dated recently saying you can fly, but they typically will not ask you.  POSSIBLY for very long flights (i.e. Chicago to Hong Kong), but probably not.  Air travel won't induce labor, but if you do spontaneously go into labor, you don't want it to be on a plane or away from home.  For me personally, I'll probably stop flying 30-34 weeks, and stay in the country after 28.

  • I cancelled a trip to China in March (at ~28 weeks), as my Dr. expressed concern and DH wouldn't have been with me. He didn't bat an eye when I mentioned a trip we're planning at 34 weeks.

I think it wa 36 weeks with my first baby? I flew around 30-32 weeks and the only thing the dr. Wanted me to do was stay hydrated and walk the aisle as much as I could because I had pitting edema (swelling) and the air pressure can make you swell more.

  • Wow, my OB's practice must be really conservative.  Their standard recommendation is no major travel after 32 weeks, and since I'm having twins they pushed it up to 28 weeks.  No traveling for me after March 15, which might make out-of-town baby showers with family a little difficult.
  • I'm planning babymoon for middle of April 31-32 weeks. I'm flying 4 hrs. I shld let my doc know...
  • thanks, ladies! we are hoping for bermuda around 32wks. i am hoping for a continued boring pregnancy so i can enjoy it!

  • My dr. hasn't mentioned a specific time but from experience I won't be flying after 30 weeks or so.  DS came at 36w1d with absolutely no warning (check up that same morning showed NO progress - my water broke spontaneously) so I'm sticking around home for most of 3rd tri.

  • It all depends... I'm flying back from Europe 34 days before my EDD. My midwife is not concerned as long as I remain low-risk. The airline policy is that flying up to and including 36w is fine and does not require a doctors note.

  • First I would ask your doctor. I had a lot of complications in the begging and almost lost the baby more than once. My doctor still gave me the okay to fly up to 36 weeks. She did inform me that things can change and that time line could change. The 36 weeks was for an international move to Germany which is around 8-10hr flight. My husband is in the Army and that's our next duty station. Thankfully we leave well before 36 weeks, but that was an in-case number she gave me.

Secondly check with the airline. Each one has there own requirements.

Do what you think is best for you and baby.
  • dr said i am good to go at 32 wks assuming of course that the anatomy scan is good and the pregnancy continues to be uneventful. fingers crossed!!
