Re: I AM JUDGING

  • I judge a girl I know quite a lot....not that long ago it was 40 degrees out and her son did not have a coat or anything on just a t-shirt! And he's not even a year old yet and she was walking around with him and hanging out with her friends at the park....I judge her quite a lot...I Hate that I do but oh well!

  • I judged a mom for having her kid in a bucket car seat with a coat on. They left the kid in the seat with the coat on the whole time they were there too. They got a side eye.

  • Ditto allll the above.  I bet I get a side eye for the light clothing my kids arrive in/leave in, in the name of car seat safety.  There's a kid in pre-k (so, probably 5 at the oldest) who arrives at daycare in the front fucking seat of his mother's car.

I have a friend that gets a side eye from me allll the time. She will put her daughters car seat in the front seat with her because her daughter will throw a fit because she wants to sit up front with mommy. It drives me crazy that she doesn't see how this is wrong. This same friend also put the little girl on the front seat when she was in the infant seat when she was on a 3 hour car ride because the baby wouldn't stop crying. Wtf?! Pull over and soothe your baby!!! This girl now has 2 kids and tried to tell me how to parent my son. Lots of eye rolls from me!

  • I definitely get looks from the other nursery room parents at A's DCP for not having her A. bundled in puffy gear and B. not in an infant bucket that's left there.

She is in a thin, warm jacket that fits properly in her convertible seat that is properly installed and properly fitted. She also has a hat, mittens, soft shell boots and a fleece blanket that goes over her when she is strapped into the pre-warmed car. We have a snowsuit, and she wears it to be outside, but I am sure not going to endanger her with puffy junk.

Our lil' diva: late like her Momma: 40 weeks 5 days!
  • I was pulling out of Whole Foods the other day and as I was turning left saw the family that was in front of me in line's kid (maybe a year old) turning right and their kid bouncing around the backseat with teh mother! WTF!!!
  • I agree for the most part, especially with the example you gave from the Today Show. With the crazy cold we have been having on the East Coast lately, everyone should be bundling up.

However, when it gets into the 50s and 60s, I think that people need to realize that every baby is different.  My son runs warm and gets very easily overheated. If he wears a hat and mittens at those temperatures, he often gets overheated, so I judge whether he needs to wear those on a day by day basis.  At first, my mom was totally judging me for it. She would always be like, "Where's that boy's hat!?" But then when I showed her how warm he runs and how he will sometimes be literally dripping with sweat if I bundle him up too much at those temperatures, she realized she shouldn't have judged.
  • One of the mom's at daycare has a baby who is a week older than DD.  She just moved him to a convertible seat and was telling me that now she has to put him in a snowsuit (!) in his carseat so he'll stay warm.  I wanted to say something but she thinks I 'read' too much about baby care and should just go with it.

My SIL has her 7 month old forward facing in a convertible car seat. She says it's because she likes to see everything. My H will make comments like "well bel194 says that's not safe" but she just rolls her eyes. I also recently found out that my MIL got a ticket before for not having my 2 year old niece or my 3 year old nephew in any kind of child seat. They were just using seatbelts. I'm totally judging over here.
You know this but does she know it's not legal (beyond unsafe)?  States have one of two rules - 1 AND 20 pounds or proper use.  Since there's not a single car seat on the market that allows for forward facing before 1 and 22 at a minimum (some have more stringent guidelines), she's breaking the law in either case.

I feel like I get judged because LO doesn't have mittens on.  I live in SE Georgia, so most of the time we don't even need them, and she has a hat and fleece jacket on when outside.  I've looked everywhere, but can't seem to find mittens that are small enough for her hands (links would be appreciated if you know something I don't, people who deal with cold more often than I), so I'm tempted to bust out the scratch mittens from when she was a newborn and just use those.
I live in Atlanta and I haven't felt like I needed to put mittens on LO once. We are never outside for more than 30 seconds at a time. If I was taking a walk or something and the temps were under 40 degrees I would probably want her hands to be covered.

Yeah I've told her but she just brushes it off and says that she's fine. Not sure what else to do.
    BFP #1: due 6/17/2013, DD born 6/25/13
    BFP #2: due 6/30/2017, MMC found 12/7/2016

  • So I never put coats on the kiddos while they are in the carseat. Lo has one of those bundle sacks in the bucket seat, and for G I do hat, mittens, fleece and then I put his puffy jacket on backwards OVER the buckled straps if it's super cold. I may be judged at daycare for the lack of clothing walking in but I am in such a rush I don't even notice! It's like a two foot walk to the door though and both kids have snowsuits that stay in their cubbies there if they play outside.

  • @bonniek10 I have the bundleme kind but honestly the back (part up against the seat) is so very thin that it's thinner than even his lightest fleece or hoodie. There is like no insulation on the back part. And then the straps all pull directly through the slots.

  • I judge this girl on my fb on a daily basis when it comes to her parenting.
For example she had a baby in may, she's been posting pictures of her baby eating a sucker.

I aside eye her all the damn time!!

We live in the San Joaquin Valley in California. Mostly 60's in the winter like now. I don't bother to try and put socks or shoes on DD because they fall off or she pulls them off. If we are going to be outside for more than a few minutes I wear her inside my jacket where her feet are covered by my clothes. My MIL is ALWAYS saying something about it when she sees her; and they live next door. Drives me nuts!
  • I am sure people side I me because I don't put a coat on my kid. I find it a pain in the butt to take it on and off and seriously the 2 minuts it takes us to get to the car she is fine. That being said if we were going to be outside any length of time I would put it on. I usually always have a hat on her big bald head though. B-) I go by the rule if I am ok she probably is ok and she is a sweater. She gets too warm really fast.

I had a similar incident with DH's cousin. She posted a pic on Facebook of her youngest LO (no more than 6 months old at the time) "trying out big brother's spare seat" for the 5 hr drive to my SIL's. It was a convertible seat but she had it installed FF. The straps were loose and the chest clip at his belly. SIL and I each privately commented to her about safer car seat practices, and also let her know that this was highly illegal (Alberta law states that a child must meet ALL of the following requirements before FF: 1 year of age, 20 lbs and can walk unassisted). She came back saying that her doctor told her that "her" children were actually safer FF. What the actual fuck?!? I told her to find a new doc.

@elmoali When i worked at a car dealership we got calls allllll the time... "Why is my passenger airbag light on?" "Do you have a child in the front seat?" "Yes." "The airbag turns off because your kid is too small to be there and the airbag can hurt or kill your kid instead of helping them. The kid should be in the back." It was either a kid or a heavy purse. Lol
