NWMR: When did your LO's start walking?

Hi All-

My DD3 will be 13 months this weekend and she has yet to take an independent step on her own. She does great with push toys, holding hands, crusing and climbing....she will even stand independently on her own for a second or two. She just has no desire to take a step. DD1 was walking by one and DD2 was running by 11 months- I know I shouldn't worry, but just wanted some reassurance :)

Re: NWMR: When did your LO's start walking?

  • DS walked independently at 17 months and DD at 10 months.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

  • Don't worry at 13 months!  DS walked at 10 months, but I remember the huge range in all of his daycare friends.  Some didn't want until closer to 18 months and now you would never know the difference.  I'm convinced that its a personality thing.  The easy going infants were later to walk.  They were just chill.  The energetic (and high needs) infants were walking earlier.

  • 9 months for my son and 14 months for my daughter. And both went from crawling to running in like 2 minutes flat. My sister didn't walk till 16 months, and went on to get athletic scholarships to college.
There's a HUGE range of normal; it sounds like your DC is so close.  Obviously if you're worried, speak to the pedi, but honestly she sounds fine.
  • DD was 16 months when she started walking.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • About 13.5 months. Same as yours. World championship cruiser, hell on wheels with a push toy, happy to hold hands. But mine stood more than yours appears to. We finally had to refuse to hold her hands, and when she figured out she could hold 2 toys and walk, that's all she wrote! At 17 mos, she now runs everywhere. I was worried, too, but it turned out I didn't need to be. (Btw, our doc told us if she was walking holding hands and cruising, we really shouldn't be concerned about any physical issues with her hips or knees or anything, which did relieve us some.)
  • Just FYI: But the average age for independent walking is 14months.

I thought for sure DD would an early walker since she was cruising very well at 9months, and walking hold our fingers and all the lead up to walking by 10months....Then she decided to take her time. She would take a few steps her and there for months, but full on walking didn't happen until she was 13.5months.

  • Right before his birthday. But he was never into that holding hands while walking thing, he'd either cruise or be carried but he did not like Mom or Dad's help while walking. My friend's son just loved walking around holding on to his parents, and he walked independently a little later. Very normal to not walk for a couple months past the 1st birthday.

  • My DD walked at 12 months (not by her first birthday, but a couple weeks after).  Honestly, though, I felt like that was pretty early among the kids in my group of friends.  I feel like maybe 14 months or so was more average.

  • Mine started walking at 10 months, but everything I read says 13 months is average.  I wouldn't worry until she's 17-18 months or so.

  • Don't worry too much if she is standing and using push toys well, she will get there. If she was still sitting and not doing the above then I would worry. Normal is such a broad term and kids go at their own pace. My son started walking at 10-11 months but my mother said I didn't start speaking until I was three and have never shut up since.
  • DD took assisted steps before her first birthday and started walking independently soon after.

  • DD didn't walk until almost 15 months.  You have plenty of time, don't stress :)

  • Thank you everyone for your responses! I try not to worry, but you all know how it is as a mom- you can't help it sometimes :) Last night I noticed that she stood more on her own- my sister is babysitting her this morning and she just called and said she stood on her own for a good minute. I'm sure it will be any day now. Thanks again for sharing your experiences.
