High-Risk Pregnancy

Mercaptipouine(6mp) and pregnancy

Hello ladies. Perhaps this is the wrong spot but I don't really know where else to ask this. Also I am on my iPad so it'll probably come off in one big paragraph. I am high risk due to an autoimmune disease. I was told I will get more u/s to check babies growth since I have trouble absorbing nutrients. I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2009 and I haven't actually ever gotten it under control, though it is MUCH better with my combination therapy. I take 4 pills of lialda a day, 50 mgs of 6mp a day and I go in for remicaid infusions every 7 weeks. I was told remicaid and lialda are safe but 6mp can cause early miscarriages and should not be taken during pregnancy. When I talked to my specialist he told me to stay on. All three drugs so I stay healthy, however my OB/gyn said come off it . So here is the most confusing aspect of it. I've read in small doses 6mp is safe in pregnancy. Since the drug is used to treat cancer it's the huger doses for cancer treatment that causes miscarriages. I would be considered on a low(er) dose at 50 mgs. At this point in time I have frozen taking this drug and have continued on taking the daily lialda...I just don't know where to go from here...

  • That is a tough choice. I don't know if anyone can tell you what to do. Ultimately you will need to make a decision so you are at peace. Is the 6mp a med that has a short half life (exits system quickly?). Is there a drastic improvement after not being on it and then taking one dose?

If that's the case, maybe stay of and see how you do w/o it only adding it back if absolutely necessary.

I wish you luck in your decision and pregnancy.

  • I decided to not take 6mp during pregnancy. It's caused more diarrhea than I'd like and it's harder to process things like raw vegetables and popcorn but in the end it's worth it. Also if I miscarried I would have a very hard time knowing it may have been my fault. I have an infusion in a few days so that'll help clear things up for 5 or 6 weeks. I appreciate the responses. It does help to hear others point of view.

  • That is a lot to process.

I want to follow each Dr's advice but it's difficult when they have conflicting veiws. I'm so confused as to the best option in this case. I feel like either way there isn't a correct answer and everyone around me has their point of view on it. FI wants me off it, parents are just worried in general...

i have a remicaid infusion set up for tomorrow and have still be taking my lialda. I'm just very torn on the 6mp. I can't get in to see my Gi until June. Between then and now it's talking to the nurses and they relay messages to him and then call me back. It can be frustraiting. :(

  • Hi
I guess I'm a little late to this discussion but just wondering if you have figured anything out yet?
I was diagnosed with Crohns almost 10 years ago. I would think having a bad flare up could cause more damage that a pretty small dose of 6MP. Definitely stopping suddenly should be avoided if possible.

Just wondering how far along you both are. I am 21 weeks today with my first pregnancy and different doctors keep giving me conflicting opinions as well which really is quite frustrating.

  • @JBC2020 I ended up stopping 6mp. I feel like it may have been a bad choice but with all the conflicting information I just didn't know what to do. After my remicaid infusion I started having bleeding and cramping (threatened miscarraige) and I just didn't feel right(i think it may have been due to a severeallergic reaction to the remicaid over 6mp though). The bleeding stopped after a few days, baby is fine but it was scary. The remicaid infusions are what really helps me. My body becomes normal after an infusion but as I get further away from an infusion I begin to flare. The lialda helps the flare not be as bad (6mp also would help the flare not be as bad but it never prevented a flare). I feel like you should follow what you feel is right. If you decide to come off 6mp talk to your GI if you decide to stay on 6mp talk to your ob (at least educate them on 6mp and that you are on a low dose).

  • @lookame3639

sorry to hear you had a hard time but glad your doing better. Will you be able to continue with your remicade after you had the reaction to it? I had to stop getting infusions because I went into shock. Hope all continues to go well
  • @JBC2020 Actually I have reactions all the time. I get pre med (2 benedryl, 2 tylenol and a hydrocortisone shot) it takes about half an hour before they kick in and once they kick in I'm ok. However the nurses are in such a rush no amount of me warning them seems to get through their heads. Within 15 minutes the hives start, last time though my throat started swelling up (it felt like strep throat and whenever any liquid hit it i would cough because it hurt). As long as they give me a half an hour for the meds to kick in I'm ok and after an allergic reaction I can get all the medicine I require.

...stupid nurses...they want to get everyone done in half an hour and get them gone and they end up risking my life and staying muchlater than they want to...
