Fall and need advice

Alexis took a small fall, but her mouth has been bleeding around 45 minutes now. She quit crying after about 5 minutes, but it won't stop bleeding. I think it's her tongue but she won't let me look. I didn't think I should take her to the ER except its still bleeding. I gave her a washcloth with ice in it that she chewed on for a while, but she doesn't want that's anymore. She wants to bf, but it seems to make the bleeding worse. Any one have advice.

Re: Fall and need advice

  • Is there an on-call or nurse's line you can check with?

  • Also, I'm glad she seems to be good besides the bleeding!

  • Is it really flowing or just kind of oozing?

  • Sometimes it seems like it's just oozing because I think it's stopped and then I will see new blood. Then it will seem like it's just continuously flowing out of her mouth.

  • Tongue injuries bleed  a lot. The blood mixed with saliva could make it look worse than it is.  also if it is the tongue there's not much they can do.  DDoes she seem to be in pain?
  • She is not acting like she is in pain.

  • I ended up getting ahold of someone and they basically said ice it. They don't do much for tongue injuries. They said we can bring her in to have a doctor look if we feel like it. I think I will give it a little longer and hope my husband goes on break shortly and see what he thinks. I don't want to put her to bed until I know it has stopped bleeding.

  • We took her to the ER. They were able to look and she did a good number on it, but they couldn't do much. They said it might continue to bleed for the next 12-24 hours depending on how much she plays with it. Since it is worse when she nurses he said not to nurse her for a couple days and use sippy cups instead. I had been thinking of starting to wean her but it is killing me to hear her cry because she wants to nurse and I can't. I tried giving her a sippy and she kept pushing it away and tried pulling up my shirt. I'm just so glad h was able to leave work early and meet me at the ER and is helping put her to bed. Thanks again for all the advice.

  • Wish I would've seen this earlier, we went thru almost the same exact thing a few weeks ago. DH took her to the ER (he though she lost her teeth, but what he saw was actually just Cheerios floating around her mouth) and there was really nothing they could do for us. They said mouth injuries tend to bleed a lot and that blood plus a drooling baby makes it look worse than it is. They also told us to only let her use the straw cups that aren't leak proof because sucking on anything with that leakproof valve thing could start the bleeding again.

Sorry you had a rough night, I know it's so scary! Even though taking them to the ER sucks, you'll probably sleep a little better tonight knowing that she's ok rather than wondering what you should do.

  • I hope Alexis is feeling better and I'm glad you took her to the ER to get it checked out. When I was 2 years old I was standing on a chair at the dinner table the chair leaned back and I hit my chin on the table biting my tongue almost in half. They had to put me in a straight jacket to stitch it back together. I survived but that is why you're mommy told you not to stand on chairs!

  • Glad to hear she is okay and doesn't seem to be in any pain. It's probably worse for you than it is for her. Hope you guys had a restful night!

  • This happened to us and LO bit his tongue...it was still bleeding 3 hours later. we went to the ER and he needed 2 stitches. Worst experience of my life, glad you didn't have to go through that! Glad she's ok.

  • What's crazy is she tripped over her own feet. She didn't even fall from a height. When she woke up this morning she wanted to nurse so badly. She refused to take a sippy cup even after I pumped and showed her it was the same thing. All she would do was push it away. I finally gave in and nursed her because it seemed to have stopped bleeding. She bled a little bit, but not like last night.
