How much to pay -Family Babysitter

DS is sick... he spiked a fever at DC today so he cannot go tomorrow.  My SIL's sister (we consider her family and are close... she's 26 y.o. if that matters for rate) is going to come watch him from 7:30-approximatey 1:30 tomorrow because I have a  hearing I cannot miss. I told her we would pay her (and we will) she said no.  How much would you pay a family member? I do not want to short change her but we are on a tight budget right now.  I was thinking $10 an hour and rounding up... would that be right? We've never paid a baby sitter before.

Thanks!

  • I was thinking a gift card too... hmmm

She's really awesome. She truly considers DS one of her nephews and treats him like one. He's a lucky boy. When I realized we were in a bind I called her and she said yes without a second of hesitation!

  • Loading the player...
  • try to pay her. if she doesnt take the money, then a gift card is a good idea to show your appreciation. and $10./hr is good.
  • $10/hr or an equivalent GC is reasonable. I like the idea of lunch delivered.

    Hope LO feels better!

  • If my family member said no to cash, I'd definitely stock the house full of food or leave cash for take-out and slip them a gift card at some point.

  • I've had family and friends babysit my sick child before and paid $10/hr, we do $12/hr for other sitters. I am also in the Philly area.

  • Thank you all. There wasn't time to stock the house unfortunately but we are going to pay her. If she refuses the money we will get a gift card for her and send it to her so she cannot say no. She only lives a few minutes away but she'd have to go out of her way to return it.

    I appreciate all your input!

DS seems a bit better today but now I'm sick. the joys of daycare I guess!
