3rd Trimester

How long will YOU wait?

Lurking from 2nd tri *waves*

Just curious what everyone's opinion is on inducing past your due date. I have a friend that went to (what I would consider) extremes to prepare for and have a natural, home water birth and avoid a C section at all costs. She is a first time mom, and is now at 42 weeks, 2 days with zero progress.

Do you have a day after your due date that you say "Induce me"? Does your midwife/OB? Or are you in the boat she is in, where the baby will come when it's good and ready?

Re: How long will YOU wait?

  • Apparently, military insurance won't let you go past 41 weeks anymore. If it were up to me, I'd wait so long as baby was okay. Unfortunately, I don't get that option...I have to be induced early for medical reasons.

  • I say THE DAY after my due date, induce me.... I'm so done being pregnant. I want to have my body back!

I'm assuming she has a mid-wife if shes having a home birth. I'm surprised the mid-wife has let her go this long.

  • I wonder what she has tried at home to naturally induce labor? There is still a chance she can avoid csection, she may just have to be induced at the hospital though.

    Also lurking from 2nd tri...

I haven't discussed this with my OB yet but my own preference would be to wait as long as it's safe to do so for a natural labour. There's no uncertainty in my due date since I was temping/charting and had 2 early ultrasounds that confirmed. At this point, I'd be comfortable going 7-10 days past my due date, maybe to 42 weeks as long as monitoring indicates that things are still ok with the placenta and fluid levels. At the same time, if it doesn't look like anything is progressing and there are no signs of labour starting on its own, I'll probably given in sooner.

Of course, I say this now but I as get closer to 40 weeks, I may just want to get it over with asap!

  • I was induced for medical reasons.  I failed to progress/they failed to wait.  Had a c-section.  Having been through an induction and c-section I say they are something to be avoided unless absolutely medically necessary for the health and well being of mother and/or baby.
  • I wouldn't want to get past 42 weeks, since the placenta starts to break down.

  • As you approach your due date this is something your OB will discuss with you. With my first we discussed the exit strategy at 37 weeks.  We discussed it on a week by week basis.  When I hit 41 weeks with no progression we opted to induce.

Due to medical reasons with this pregnancy I was just informed (at 38 weeks) that I will be getting induced next week.

I would say if you haven't discussed this with your OB yet, bring it up when you are around week 36.  If gives you time to discuss options with your OB and plenty of time to weigh the options on your own.

I had a great experience when I was induced with my first, but I am a little bummed to be getting induced again.  I was really wanting the "oh it's time" moment.  GL!
  • I would think up to 42 weeks. If she has NO progress at 42 weeks, that's a bit odd. I have been overdue, but I had been slowly progressing as well. I want to avoid medical intervention honestly, so I'll for sure allow this baby to hit 42 weeks before I consider going the medical route. (as long as he's healthy and I'm healthy)

  • Assuming I was 100% positive of my dates…I wouldn't have an issue going a bit past 42 weeks.  BUT I would want a biophysical profile to check baby/fluid levels starting by 41 weeks or so.  I went to 41 weeks 3 days last time.  I'd also start "natural" induction methods if I was about to hit 42 weeks.
  • Just to chime in, my hospital had a policy on this--they won't let you go past 41 weeks. I'm sure had I made a big deal of it they may have allowed me to wait longer, but I didn't. I was induced at 41 weeks exactly and had a wonderful experience. It doesn't have to be a super aggressive medical intervention either--my hospital was amazing and gave me the bare minimum of every drug and it worked despite a very slow start. If you find yourself in this situation, just be educated about your options and don't panic--induction does not always equal c-section.

  • I'm agreeing with what some PPs are saying in that your due date, of course, is based off an estimation according to your LMP. That's why you hear the 2 weeks early, 2 weeks later "rule". Demanding an induction the next day is a little...over the top? Overzealous? Let that baby stay in there as long as possible (as long as the little one is ok of course).

  • My midwife/OB practice recommends induction at 41w + 3d, so 10 days late.  I bet I could stretch it out a day or two if I really wanted to, but I'm hoping to go before then!

  • With DD, I scheduled my induction after my 39 week appt, for the following week. So I would have been 40 weeks and a couple of days.

My water started to leak at 39 weeks 5 days, and so since I didn't go into natural full blown labor, they induced me that point.

I will probably due the same this time unless baby is measuring abnormally big, they may want to induce sooner, but I am ok with waiting till 40-41 weeks if that is how it works out.

  • We were going to induce at 41w3d. My BP was climbing etc. DS made his own grand entrance all by himself the day before I was scheduled to go in.

  • I think it really depends on your pregnancy. With DD1 I was induced at 39w3d for various reasons. DD2 had a eviction set for 40w1d in case she didn't come while my doctor was on vacation but I went naturally at 38w4d. I would personally never want to go much past my due date because I know I have large babies, progress early (2+cm and 90% effaced by 35 weeks) and they were both plenty ready (chubby, great APGAR, etc) when they came early. I get very worried about cords around their necks (both mine were born that way) and aspiration the further along I get too so that definitely plays into it. Though that's me, I wouldn't say that everyone is that way. I don't know that my doctor would induce if my cervix wasn't very favorable and he didn't know my babies were on the larger side for my body. This one is measuring even larger than the first two, so I'm a little nervous, but doubt I'll make it to 40 weeks. Quite honestly, most people are pretty over it by the time they hit 38 weeks.

I'd happily go to 42 weeks, but probably not beyond. My mw's policy is to induce at 42 weeks, unless you're over 40 in which case policy is 40 weeks.

Oh and both my girls were born at 40 weeks, 5 days.

  • I'm very sure of my dates due to charting, and I think I'd be comfortable until 42 weeks. DS was born at 38w4d though so I don't expect I'll need to wait that long, but you never know!

Other pregnant military wives from our base. I didn't really look into it too hard because I can't go that long anyway.

Hmm, I wonder if it's a base-specific thing.  We get seen off-base here, so I think I"ll be good.

  • I didn't know that either

  • I would probably wait a week. I know exactly what day within a day or two what day I ovulated so I would wait a week and then get induced. I think it is ok to go for two weeks because especially if someones cycles are wonky, or they didn't plan it they could really not know when they ovulated.
  • Assuming medical monitoring, there is no need for induction. BUT the second an issue arises with, mom, baby, or placenta induction is needed personally. The notion that past 40 weeks, or even past 42 weeks the placenta has problems is a genetalality, NOT an case by case assessment. Since she is being seen by a midwife for her homebirth, she is trying to avoid the hospital. I'm sure her preference for healthy baby comes before avoiding the hospital, she just hasn't crossed that bridge yet.

I personally do not follow the fear based health 'recommendations' that seen to plague the prenatal system. An individual approach to my and baby care is what I want, not broad guidelines that encompass everyone in different stated of health. Guidelines are exactly that, not rules set in stone new to change based on an individuals case and situation.

Estimated due date is exactly that, an estimate. Everyone grows babies differently, at different rates. Some people give birth to health babies at 35 weeks, some need up to 42 to have healthy babies. With monitoring, there is nothing wrong with waiting.

  • When I had this discussion with my OB as I approached my EDD, she told me she didn't let her patients go 10 days past their EDD's.

  • I would be critical about why they want to induce.  There needs to be more of a reason to induce than just the date.  If the doctor just said that it's because I'm a few days past my due date then I would need a better reason.
  • I was induced at 41 weeks with DD. My water broke about 2 hours after the pitocin started & everything was natural from there. I needed very little medical intervention.

  • My OB does not want to go past 41 weeks either. I'm 39 weeks 2 days now. Hoping LO will come on her own!
  • I would like to wait until at least 42 weeks to be induced. My midwife won't go past that date though. I was induced with my other two at 40 weeks 3 and 4 days. It was not my choice to be induced at that time.
