Overfeeding?

LO is 3 weeks old tomorrow and she's been very fussy and acting hungry all the time but won't eat much sometimes (1oz-1 1/2oz) then when she does eat she eats (2-3oz) but she spits it all back up and has gas all the time...pediatrician told us sounds like overfeeding and try to push her from eating every 2 hours to 3-4 hours...anyone else ever experienced this? Any suggestions?

Re: Overfeeding?

  • Do you burp often? My pedi said spitting up is ok, vomiting is not... So if it is truly spit up and not vomit, then I would say burp more, and don't lay LO down until you do. Usually the only time my LO spits up is when we out her down before she gets all her burps out :-)

  • I would say try to burp really well, I believe that can cause spit up too, plus gas and fussiness. Not an expert by any means but sounds like maybe a 3 week growth spurt going on too possibly.
  • I'm not sure about over feeding, but I try to just feed LO when she's showing hunger signs. That is between 2-4 hours, depending in how much she ate at the last feeding or her mood that day or whatever. If she hasn't eaten in 4 hours I try to feed her anyway. At night I let her go 5 hours before I wake her.

  • We did switch formulas about a week and a half ago from similac to emfamil when she drinks she seems like she is drinking super fast but then you look at the bottle and she really hasn't drank like any she didn't start having this problem until about 3 or 4 days ago
  • Maybe switch to preemie nipples?

  • We have the avent and playtex air vent bottles she seems to do better with The avent bottles but maybe I'll try the preemie nipples
