Solid Food Allergies

I know a lot of us have already started solids, but I searched and couldn't find anything mentioned about any LO's showing any signs of an allergic reaction to any of the starter foods.

Just wondering if anyones encountered anything yet or if you've had a scare that didn't turn out to be a reaction.

Re: Solid Food Allergies

  • We had a small rash and loose stool after we tried cereal. Dr said it didn't sound like a typical allergy so try again in a week. We decided to wait a month then just go to avocado no reaction since

  • No but I think this is why you only try one good per day for numerous days in a row. That way if there is a reaction, you stop it and know exactly what it was from.

  • @blondiebia21. Yeah, it's easier to isolate the reaction if you know exactly what it was your child ate. I've read either 3 or 4 days per food.

  • First foods are suggested to be first foods bc the incidence of allergy is really low in the first place.

When you get into the 9mo+ appropriate foods (berries, stone fruit, dairy), that's when a reaction - if one were to happen - would be most likely to occur and why those are delayed as well.

Even then, it may take repeated exposure for a reaction to occur.

  • @carrotcake06. I had read that as well when we had the okay from our pediatrician to start. I was just curious if anyone had encountered anything, even just a little bit of a reaction, not necessarily an allergy, at all yet.

We actually ended up with a bit of an eczema flare up from bananas, but it also coincided with this awfully cold weather.

  • @pfftyouarenuts gotcha. We haven't had any reactions but we've only tried cereal and sweet potatoes so far. My big one was really lucky and doesn't have any sensitivities at all. I don't drink milk, but that was an adult-onset thing.

  • With my DD1 she got a face rash -- mostly around her mouth when we gave her peaches. A few hour later she had diarrhea and had an instant butt rash like it burned coming out. It cleared up after a few days. Daycare mistakenly gave it to her a few days later and she had the same reaction. It may not be a true allergy but given how horrible it was we never gave her peaches again.
  • @carrotcake06. That's good you haven't had to deal with that before. The only known food allergies in my family (including my sister's three kids) is my brother's sensitivity to dairy. Other than that... NO ONE in my family is allergic to anything. Same with DH's family.

The one thing I'm not looking forward to is dealing with any medicine type allergies. DH is allergic to the whole -cillin family, so I'm going to be a nervous wreck if/when we encounter that.

  • @EmR22. I'd probably just skip it all together too.

My niece gets an eczema flare up from corn!

We have just started with oatmeal so no signs yet.

J has a milk sensitivity so he had a 9 week eczema flare up on his cheeks - didn't go away until we got him on Nutramigen steadily. He also seems to have a soy sensitivity so I am a little nervous with trying out some the pod veggies as I've heard that things like green beans can cause an issue.

I wonder what it is about those particular foods that cause flare ups. Weird. Glad you figured out your LO's sensitivity, but bummer about being nervous about trying new foods :(

    (edit: I accidentally double quoted.)

  • DS1 had a reaction to cinnamon as a baby. I added it to his cereal as suggested by a nutritionist and Super Baby Foods book, not knowing that it's a top 10 allergen. His skin around his mouth turned bright red. At 4, his skin still turns red when he eats certain foods. He also had hives after amoxicillin. The scariest reaction he had was to fish... He kept sticking his hand down his throat after having it on multiple occasions. That was when he was 18 months and I haven't been brave enough to give it to him again.
  • @cocolamo1. That's scary about the reaction to fish! Not worth it!

My second daughter had a reaction to amoxicillin at 7 months. She had hives all over her body. Thankfully no breathing issues. It was super scary though.
