Do you like the name Bali?

edited January 2014 in Baby Names
Do you like the name Bali (Bah-lee)? I think it sounds pretty and it has meaning to my husband and me. I realize it is uncommon and actually more common as a Hindi boy name, but I want to use it for a girl. I like the idea of it not being a common name. Please tell me "yes," "no" or "it's growing on me." as a response. I posted this question on another site and some people were a little rude. I have already pondered many reasons why the name may or may not be a good idea, which is why I'm still only considering it rather than having already decided on it. I also feel that so many names can be linked to a word that would evoke teasing. So what I really need is just to get an idea of how many people like the sound of the name. I would prefer not to see a list of negativity in case I do decide to use it. I like the way the name makes me feel and it's perfect for our last name, but I would also like if the name were well received by people.

  • I learned the hard way. If you don't want negative opinions about a name - DON'T ASK. Because you will get them. It WILL hurt your feelings if you are really loving a name and you can't get mad because YOU asked.

I totally get the temptation but you run a real risk when you ask - no matter where you ask.

We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • Bali is the name of an Indonesian Island.  And the beginning of a song from the musical South Pacific.  I would definitely wonder if the child were a "honeymoon" baby if I heard his/her name were Bali.

So you want to take a name from another culture, disrespect its history and meaning as a male name, and put it on a girl because you think it sounds better?

    Really?
    Agree with this.

    I agree with Joy.

I didn't feel like reading the stipulations listed for a proper response so I'll just say don't do it.

  • You can't dictate how people post. If you don't want answers, don't ask. Also, I voted no because I don't like it at all. I don't like how it sounds, and I agree with the Bali Fitness comment.
  • I really don't like it.
  • I agree it might be best in the MN spot if it has personal meaning to you and your H.

  • I don't know your culture or anything about you, but I'm guessing you've already considered whether or not it would be considered offensive or culturally insensitive. Maybe people who know you might consider it fitting? Hopefully you didn't decide on this name because you got knocked up in Bali, or met your husband at a gym. If you love it and it means a lot to you, and you've considered at least some of what these previous posters say, then you rock it out. Just be aware that this kid will be an adult one day and people will be referring to her as "Bolly" not "Bah-lee"

  • In my world... its a place not a name.
  • No no no. It's awful. There are plenty of unique / uncommon names that are actually names. I would judge the heck out of that name.

If I met a child named Bali (whose parents didn't speak Hindi) I would assume their parents conceived on a vacation there and thought it would- teehee- be a 'cute' way to remember the holiday. And I would cringe at the thought.

  • While I love Bali as a holiday spot (with special meaning to me also) and it is fun to say, it would be like naming a kid Niagara or Goa. I did name a dog Firenzo after Florence, Italy - but that is a silly little dog. Save Bali for a pet.
  • I'm also curious why you posted in both April 2014 and July 2014. Are you having a baby or just spamming the month boards?

And I don't think it's such a big deal that you need to post everywhere under the sun. I'm going to guess you're getting the same reaction everywhere-it's not a good name.

  • Just seconding pretty much everything everyone else said       Sorry its not what you want to hear but not quite sure why you asked on an opinion board then.   GL - it sounds to me that your gut is telling you this isn't a good idea but in your heart you want it to be.   Always go with your gut :)

  • I hate it. Like really, really hate it. And the fact that it is a boys name makes me hate it even more. If it had actual cultural significance for you and was being used for a boy I could see it. Otherwise it is just terrible.

  • To me Bali is a place.

Unless you're a Hindu couple having a boy my vote is a firm no.
  • Don't bother to respond to her, for this is all you will get as a "Thank you"...
Thanks to everyone for taking the poll. I realized after looking at other data that it's common for most names to have a large percentage of dislikes. I really didn't learn anything for the comments on why not to use the name bc I already knew all of those reasons. They weren't really that impressive to me either. I was mostly interested in how many people would like the name. Sorry. I tried to help you not waste you not waste your time with telling me! I really love the name and I think I like it paired with Anne as a middle name. I'm a little excited about the people who voted "it's growing on me." It's like planting a pretty little name seed and watching it sprout.
Your comments are unimpressive. She is more interested in  watching the "pretty little name" seed she has planted sprout into a beautiful, yet ridiculed flower.
