Does your LO favor a side?

I've noticed in recent days DD has favored her right side. I decided to look at her birth thru now pictures, and all of them are her lying that way.

Has anyone else noticed this in their babies? I'm going to bring it up to DD's pediatrican on Saturday, but JIC in the interim I will be lying her down on the opposite side. She does tummy time, in fact, loves it actually when practiced on mommy/daddy. Its just when she is sleeping, getting changed, or chillin' on her back.

Re: Does your LO favor a side?

  • LO always goes to the right. She doesn't care what's over there, it's just always the way she looks. When we play I encourage her to look to the left.

  • I would definitely encourage them to look the other way - DS strongly favored a side and ended up needing one of those helmets due to flattening.  I'm not trying to scare you, just trying to save you the $1500 we spent on the helmet since insurance doesn't cover them!

Definitely ask your pediatricians about it at the next visit.

I asked how to prevent it with future kids, and the helmet folks said to try to have visually interesting things on the non-favored side of the crib (a mirror, the door you come in through).  Or you can roll a small wash cloth and wrap that into the swaddle - not enough to have them on their sides, but just something big enough to encourage them to tilt their head that way.  Rolling it into the swaddle keeps it from being loose bedding.  Lastly, you can *gently* turn their heads periodically to the non-favored side to help loosen up those muscles.

  • DS definitely favors his right side. He even has a more flat spot on that side than on the left. He's gotten better about it as his head control has improved. We also try to turn his head when he's sleeping or playing to encourage him to look the other way, I've brought it up at every pedi visit and they say it's normal and just to encourage him to look the other way.

  • My ped asked today if he has a favorite side. My DD went to physical therapy for 5 months for that.
  • DS favors his left side.   Same as DD did, and she had mild torticollis, so I'm working with DS doing some of the stretches/exercises that I had learned for DD to try not to have an issue with it getting any worse for him.

  • My DD favored right. Like you I brought it up to the pedi. Thankfully it passed. Great that you're making sure to offer variety in positions. Even with my DS I watch; at least he appears to be balding equally both sides.

  • My first favored his right and also developed a little flat spot. We caught it early enough so he didn't need helmet.

I found this product after my son's flatness started to resolve itself but I've always been interested in it. Might be worth bringing it up to your ped see what he/she thinks.

  • LO favored a side. I took her to the chiropractor for colic and they adjusted her to correct this as well. It only took a few weeks of chiro to fix.
