Length of MOTN nursing

LO is 7 weeks and wakes every 2 hours to eat. But he only nurses for 5-7 minutes. No amount of tickling, diaper changing, burping or jostling will wake him to eat more! I feel like if he would eat longer he would maybe sleep longer?.. How long is your LO nursing MOTN? Thoughts on getting him to eat more to hopefully sleep longer stretches?

And just because I love this picture of him!

Re: Length of MOTN nursing

  • LC told me at the hospital that some babies command and conquer feedings in under ten min, so maybe your LO is like that?

  • He might not actually be very hungry? When my son wakes after only 2 hours at night I first try and get him back to sleep without feeding him. I was noticing he would go back to sleep fairly easy by me just putting the paci in his mouth and rocking him to sleep. He almost always would go back to sleep without eating. If he didn't then I would know he was actually hungry. He eventually stopped regularly waking that often. He now goes at least 4 hours at night between feedings. I don't know if that'll work for you guys, but it did for us.
  • Can you do a diaper changing and then see if he will finish eating? It's probably just a phase. I think this baby did that when she was still waking for frequently. She's 9 weeks now and sleeps longer now.her feedings are only 15 minutes now.

  • We usually try to get her back to sleep first by patting her back or shoshing her. Now, she sleeps 6-7 hours and will be up for 20 minutes to have a diaper change and eat.

  • Hopefully like pp, it's a phase! I do try soothing to sleep first. And when I realize he's hungry I turn on the light, and change him to get him good and awake but after 2-3 minutes of nursing he's starting to doze. He might be getting all he needs in that time.. I didn't think about that because when I pump I get 3.5 oz (what he drinks when I bottle feed) off one side in about 5 minutes. Maybe he's emptying me that quickly?

Thanks for the advice and suggestions!
  • My little guy only eats a few minutes too and only from one side but he sleeps about 6 hours.
  • DS eats for about 5-10 min. at night but he is pretty efficient eater. We normally get a 5 hour stretch and then a couple 3 hour stretches of sleep.

One of things my LC taught me with DD is to stroke their jaw and it will trigger sucking reflex. I normally do this if DS dozes off fast and he will normally sleep eat for a little longer.
  • My LO was doing this too. He would eat every 1-2 hours during the day and then every 2-3 hours at night, never for very long.  About a week and a half ago he started sleeping long periods at night about every other night.  A few times for 6 hours and once for 8.  I haven't done anything different so maybe it was just time?  He does eat for longer when he wakes up.

    He's a lil over 2 months.
  • Mine is doing this too. He sleeps 4-5 hours, then two 3 hour stretches. He doses after a few minutes of nursing. To me it seems they are learning to sleep longer and better at night without having to eat as much. I think it's just leading them to sleep through the night.
