Giving up the boob

Been struggling with this all week. Dd2 is 1 week. I breastfed in the hospital and pumped while at home since we couldn't get a good latch (and I was bleeding). My supply hasn't increased, while dds has sky rocketed! (She was born at 9 lbs) so I can't keep up and added in some formula. With not having time to pump and chasing a toddler around, I've been seriously just considering letting the pumping go. But the thought of that makes me really upset for some reason! I've also considered trying to get her to latch again but she gets so frustrated. Not really looking for advice. I guess I just wanted some support and to vent!

  • You have to do what's right for you!!! Hang in there!!! It's not easy making the decision.

  • Is there any way you can get to a lactation consultant? I almost gave up when we were in the NICU, but a nurse grabbed the LC who saved the day for us! It was like the angels were singing as she walked into our room. I don't care how much they charge us for her visit - it was money well spent!

  • I have similar problems. Lo won't latch. I pump all the time but don't get much out so have to supplement with formula. I never got engorged. Breasts don't leak etc. pumping is so much work and don't know how long I can keep it up! Good luck and I hope you find what works for your family. I know it's so hard
  • Do what's best for you! However, I will say my LO is 3 weeks today and just finally started latching about a week ago. I've also been taking Fenugreek and eating oatmeal daily to increase my supply. Its working well for us. We're still supplementing formula about 30% of the time, but my supply is slowly increasing. Hoping to have him fully on the boob in another week or two. And fwiw, he would get insanely frustrated just being put into position for breastfeeding. Now he latches like a pro. He still chomps a little at the beginning of the latch, but after that he eases up and does great.

That all being said, you have to do what's best for your family. But just know there is hope after a rough start! :)

  • I have a nipple shield but haven't used it yet. I'm not sure how that would help her latch on properly? My nipples are totally healed now so I've been trying to get her to latch a few times per day. Most days she will and she has a really strong latch, but the latch isn't "open enough" I guess is the best way to describe it, and she gets really mad that the flow is much slower than a bottle. I can see some dribble out so I know there's something there.

When I pump I'm getting anywhere between .5 to 2 ounces at a time (2 oz was when I didn't pump all night because she was full on colicky all night) But I just can't find time to do it! My insurance covers a "nurse practitioner" but not a lactation consultant. Not sure the difference but I'll call my OB tomorrow. I would be totally open to breastfeeding (no pump) and supplementing if needing. It's just the pump that I don't have time for. Thanks for your input! Its nice to see others didn't get their babies to breastfeed right away.
  • I just started taking funegreek and blessed thistle to help boost my supply, it's one of the best things to take for breastfeeding with keeping up your milk, hope you can cope and get through this, your in a rough patch and the tough part is almost over, I'm 4 weeks strong breastfeeding today! Goodluck!

Just wanted to mention that at my Pedi office, the nurse practitioner is also a LC. Hopefully you can find a way around the insurance issue!

  • You can also look for your local chapter of La Leche League. They are free, and a great resource. There are lactation specialists there. Also have you checked with the hospital? Mine has a breastfeeding group, and the LC heads it. Just talking with the other moms has been incredibly helpful for me.

If she can latch without it, don't start using the nipple shield! They told me in the hospital that I would need to use one if I wanted to breastfeed. After numerous meetings with different consultants and doctors the consensus is that I never needed one to begin with! Now my son gets furious when I try to nurse without it. I have to now ween him off the breast shield and on to a bare breast. It's like starting all over again...
