3rd Trimester

glucose test- have you failed the 1st and passed the 2nd?

So I just failed my 1st test and my dr wants me to take the 3hr test… has anyone failed the first and then passed the 2nd, or is it highly likely I will fail that one?
TIA

  • Yes. Twice. Often women fail the 1-he but pass the three.

  • I just found out I had elevated levels on the first test. Doing the 3 hour on Thursday. I've heard a lot of both ways. I have multiple friends who took the 3 hour and passed. And a few that still had elevated levels and had to manage their diets for the rest of pregnancy. I've heard it's pretty manageable tho and as long as you take care of yourself not a problem for you or baby.
  • I failed the 1 hour, passed the 3 hour.

In my first pregnancy I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour. I also failed my 1 hour this time and I'm waiting for my results on the 3 hour....

ETA: I just found out I passed my 3 hour. I know my number on the 1 hour was 141 (I think actually in both pregnancies.) I don't know my numbers on the 3-hour.

  • Ughgg I'm so obsessed with carbs I don't know how I can basically only eat protein and veggies for the last three months :)

  • For those that have failed then passed, any idea what your numbers were?

Yes. This happened to me. I scored 150 for the 1 hour and then had to take the 3 hour twice! And passed the 3 hour both times! It is very common. I swear they make you take the 1 hour knowing you will fail just so they can bill your insurance instead of just ordering the 3 hour first.
  • Most ladies who I've talked to that fail the 1 hr. go on to pass the 3 hr. so it's very common. However, I completely bombed both of mine, but it's not so bad. :) I'm able to keep mine in control without medication so I'm very thankful for that. Good luck to you!

  • During my first pregnancy, I passed the one hour. During my second pregnancy I failed the one hour and had to take the 3 hour test. I was lightheaded and dizzy during the 3 hour but, I made it through the test and passed with flying colors.

  • I failed the 1 hr yesterday... apparently the place i went to have it done gave me the drink for the 2hr test....

Waiting to hear from the Dr. if I have repeat the 1 hr., go for the 3hr, or best case she will see my levels were way normal for the 1/2 way through the 2hr test....

    Grrrrr.

This is exactly what I said after I went through it - I failed the 1 hour, passed the three hour and in reading up on it, about 2/3 of women who fail the first one pass the second.  The first is really just a 'screen' not a diagnostic, and now there is apparently a 2 hour test which gets the info with just one visit, but it's not offered everywhere.  It's important to find out if you have GD, of course, but they should screen for it more appropriately.
  • Yep. Failed first, passed second, but due to family history and being native American, tested a third time and failed. Officially have GD for the first time in all four of my pregnancies. I watched my mother live with diabetes for years, so I know what to expect and hopefully it will go away after I give birth.
