Freaking out!!

I set my 2 1/2 week old on my bed for literally half a second while I turned my back to grab my breast pump which was literally right there in the room with me, before I could turn back around I heard a thump and my baby girl had fallen off my bed onto the floor!! She landed on her back, and it's a very soft newly carpeted floor and she stopped crying in the matter of maybe 30 seconds but I'm still freaking! I would like to call her doctor but the offices are closed. WWYD? She's acting fine but I feel absolutely TERRIBLE and am still shaking! She hasn't ever rolled over so I just didn't think it would happen! Please don't make me feel worse than I already do, I know I messed up!

Re: Freaking out!!

  • Just relax and just keep an eye on her and if you want call the doctor in the morning when they are open. Or you can call the doctors because they usually have someone on call to answer questions or concerns. Next time make sure she is in the middle of the bed and for a little more piece of mind put pillows on either side of her.

  • I agree, relax and keep an eye on her. Call and leave a message for the doc so if they call you back they can tell you what to keep an eye out for. Things happen and you aren't the first ;)

  • Keep an eye on her, go to the ER if she starts throwing up. But if she doesn't even have any bruises, I think she's fine. Calm down, snuggle her, and breathe. I've put Jude down on the bed and stepped away before. No one expects a 2 week old to roll over that much.

  • Try to keep calm. Does your pedi have on-call nurses you can call?
  • Check her eyes for dilation and watch for throwing up or other signs of concussion. She's probably fine but I'd put in a call to the on call nurse just in case. Don't beat yourself up about it, it was an accident.

  • My DH fell asleep with our first LO on his chest when she was a newborn, woke up and freaked out that something was on his chest and threw her on the floor. Luckily, it was carpeted and she was fine.

I would just keep a close eye on her for the next few hours.

And all my girls have fallen off the bed at some point or another.
  • Pretty much everything PPs said.
To make you feel better, when I was 5yrs old, I picked up my little sister who was less than a yr old and dropped her on the hardwood floor...nothing happened to her and she's still fine. Everyone makes mistakes, don't beat yourself up over it too much.

  • Thank you ladies for the reassurance! I still am in shocked it even happened! She's perfectly fine so far, eating and acting just the same and no bumps or lumps or bruising that if can tell. My mom is a nurse and I had her look at her head, and she also thinks she's fine but still plan to call the pedi tomorrow morning
  • Yeah I leave LO on the bed to get the breast pump situated and I never thought this could happen I am going to be more careful. But on the up side I'm sure LO is fine babies are very resilient at this age survival and all. Just keep an eye and hey think about it this way your worry means you are a good mom!!!! A bad mom wouldn't care or worry.

I agree with PPs likely she's fine... That happened to a friend of mine also, and her baby was swaddled. Funny enough the ER doctor told her it's more common than most people think. Many new parents "drop" their babies and more often than not the parent is more scared or hurt than the child.

She will be ok, just check for concussion signs or anything out if the ordinary. And calm down mama :-) I really feel like babies sense our feelings.

  • Wow I didn't know they could roll that easily. I plan on being a lot more careful. .
I also have a 'to make you feel better' story..
My dad was throwing me up in the air when I was a baby and just didnt catch me. I'm fine!

  • I don't even know that she "rolled". When I set her down she was partly on my comforter, and I think she was off balance. But I had just set her down for literally ONE second!

Try not to beat yourself. She's probably just fine, babies are very resilient.

When DS was about 2 months old I put him in the corner of the couch with the boppy around him. I bent down to take the dog's collar off and DS rolled off the couch. I hadn't even step away and he hit my leg on the way down. He had a big lump on his forehead from landing on the hardwood floor. I called the ped and they said if it was over a height of 3 feet then to come in to get checked. He was fine and cried for less then a minute. It's 2 years later and thinking of the sound he made when he hit the floor (like a sack of potatoes) still makes me sick to my stomach.

LOL I'm sorry but that's hilarious. Glad your LO was OK! OP, I'm sure they're fine. I know it's scary.
  • Hope everything is fine now. We were just told by the pedi yesterday to keep DS on the floor during the day. But then added, that everyone of her kiddos has rolled off the couch at least once.

  • When DS1 was 6 weeks old I dropped him off at my husbands families business while I went to my first day back at work.. His aunt took him out of his carrier, put him back in and didn't strap him in. DH went to take him home and didn't realize he wasn't strapped, picked up the carrier and flung DS out and onto the concrete floor. He's a perfectly normal 2.5 year old! Hope she is feeling fine this morning! Don't feel bad it happens to the best of us!
