Smoothies for LOs

Anyone here make smoothies for your LO?  What do you put in yours, and how often do you offer (and how much - in oz?)

DS started refusing to eat yogurt about a month ago. I kept offering and he kept refusing (tried mixing it with other foods, tried letting him self-feed with spoon etc).  I tried kefir and he was like, "are you kidding me?"

So a few days ago I decided to make him a smoothie using frozen pureed fruits (happen to have mango puree in the freezer), plus yogurt, and WCM.  He LOVES it and chugs it down in a millisecond (this is at snack time).

As a matter of fact, he likes it so much that he can chug down 5oz in like no time.  He probably will drink more if I offer more; and I don't know if I should, or if I need to limit the amount he gets?  Before, for snack, he would eat 2-3oz of full fat greek yogurt, plus some puffs +/- fruit.  After he stopped eating yogurt, for snack, he drinks 2-3oz WCM + puffs.  As I said, the past few days, he has been drinking 4-5oz of smoothie in no time.  I am only using low fat plain yogurt in the smoothie b/c that's what I have.  But I'm still worried if I'm "overfeeding" him because a smoothie (ie liquid) is less filling than actual yogurt (more solid)?

Re: Smoothies for LOs

  • We've just started smoothies - we'll have one at lunch, and LO has some too. I don't know how much we give her, but she loves it, and I figure it's great for fruit. We also have and give her other, solid food at that meal, because it's not very filling.

Ours are double cream plain yogurt (it's all we can find that isn't low fat) and whatever fruit we have - bananas, berries, peaches etc. I try not to add juice, but will if it's too thick.

If he's happy with that as a snack, I don't think you're "overfeeding". He'll get his normal, filling meal at meal times, and if the smoothie seems to keep him going until then, it's a great way of getting fruit and dairy into him.

Yeah my straw cup. The big plastic tumbler straws. Not a sippy straw cup. That'd be hell to clean.

I'll have to try this. Henry is still hit or miss with straws in general because we never really use them.

  • She drinks it out of a normal cup - I shudder at the thought of washing a sippy/straw cup! We'll help her and it's often thick enough to actually spoon feed her some of it.

  • @zeigeficker my DD won't use a straw either, we put hers in the reusable pouches.

  • I do milk, whatever frozen fruit we have, lately peaches or strawberries. Frozen spinach or kale. I give her a sippy cup full of it.

  • Our LO is a fatty and eats anything, so if I am drinking a smoothie I will give her a sip.  But my son [3 tomorrow, omg so big!] is so picky!  He won't even drink a smoothie if I make it with his favorite things.  He's just awful with the food intake.  I'm pretty picky about what we give him, but lately it's been dannon drinkable yogurts.  They're lower sugar than the Stonyfield ones, and I can just stick a straw in them.  But mostly, he actually DRINKS them!  He won't drink milk anymore, and the pedi said yogurt counts.  Anyway, those work for us.

I offer smoothies in DS's sippy cup.  I use the OXO one and take out the valve.  It's pretty easy to clean.

  • How are you guys getting full fat yogurt? The only yogurt I can find is made with low fat milk and that includes the gerber yogurt and the yo-toddler.

@Sillygirl85, most brands make full fat plain yogurt in the big tub size (32oz, I think).  Stonyfield is one of them.  Full fat greek yogurt (again, plain) can be found in 16oz tubs by Fage, or Chobani.  I also have access to small containers of full fat plain yogurt (6oz cups) here, made by a local dairy farm.
