Freaking out- Amnio results!

I had an amnio Dec 20th and I am anxiously awaiting results. I have my phone out a lot and of course when I had it in my purse, they called. Receptionist said Dr wants to talk to you so please call in the morning as we are closed now. Are you kidding me? I am soo upset right now. And I am so scared. Why would dr want to talk to me unless its bad news?

Re: Freaking out- Amnio results!

  • Some doctors just want to talk to their patients instead of relaying messages. My doctor called me today leaving a cryptic message to call back and when I did the receptionist just told me that the med change I asked for would be called in. Uh thanks.

Try not to get too upset about it. Fingers crossed for you!

  • It may be the practice of their office to never leave medical information on voicemails.
  • Some places just have a policy that only the doctor (or sometimes the nurse) can give test results. I would think it uncommon if the receptionist could give them out.
Good luck, hope you can talk to them first thing tomorrow!

  • FX Just try to stay positive. It's probably nothing, the doc probably just didn't want to leave any info on a voicemail.

Doctors are the only people authorized to give any type of results to the patient. Just try to stay optimistic until you speak to the doctor. T&Ps! FX everything is okay!

We got that kind of call on a Friday at the close of business. We were asked to meet with a counselor. It turned out to be because all the screenings came back negative, and the next step was to screen for things not caught by the CVS. It frustrated the hell out of us. I know how crazy and stressful this time is, and I send hugs,  ts, and ps your way.

  • In my MFM office, I remember filling out paperwork that gave permission to leave (or not) information on a voice mail - I must have filled it out as my genetic counselor did leave my amnio results in a voice message, although I had to call to find out the sex of the baby.

Try not to worry - if you didn't give permission to leave a message, it's likely they couldn't and you'll have to just wait and talk with the doctor.  Hopefully it's just a conversation that will let you know that all is well!  I know how stressful it is having to wait for results - It was nearly a full month between our original NT scan and when I got our amnio results - I"m pretty sure I was a nervous wreck by the end.  Hang in there!

  • Thanks everybody. I am just so scared because the last big test we had done there, the nurse left message saying everything was ok. So now I am thinking it may not be so good if dr wants to talk to me. You may all be right though. He may want to just tell me himself.
  • Wow, that was pretty thoughtless of them.

Actually, I agree with everyone else and I think that's all it is: thoughtless.  They likely have a policy saying that the receptionist can't say anything one way or another (probably the receptionist doesn't even know!)  And even though the nurse could leave a detailed message doesn't mean a receptionist can.

  • I missed the call with my Harmony results, she just said call us back, no indication of good or bad. I'm sure your dr is the same!
  • As some pp said, I also missed a call regarding blood test results and they left a message to call them back which also made me nervous, but when I spoke to them I  had very low chances of any genetic abnormalities, they just want to be able to tell you that vs. leaving it a message, or in some cases as mentioned it could be their policy.  I wouldn't stress one way or the other until you're able to talk to them! Easier said than done, I know.  Hang in there :)

  • Something similar happened to me too. My doctor left a message, "I want to talk to you about the blood test results." I completely panicked and wasn't able to call back for about 2 hours. When I did she just said, "Everything looks good." She could have said that on the message!!

Don't freak out until there is reason to freak out, but I know that is easier said than done.
  • Yep, can't leave medical info in a VM. FX for you that's all it is!

  • Don't mean to derail the thread, but doctors can leave info on a voicemail, but you have to proactively let them know that it's Ok with you. Otherwise, they don't/can't.

I had a doctor do this to me and it freaked me out, so now I always tell them specifically, "This is a private line that only I can access, so feel free to leave detailed medical results if you need to." They usually just note it in the chart, one made me fill out a form.

They seem to prefer it as it saves them time as well.

OP: As PPs said, I suspect that's what's going on here, and you probably have nothing to worry about -- although I certainly understand your frustration. Just try and keep calm until you hear back. T&Ps.

  • Another emotional day. It took awhile to get in contact with the dr. Once I did, he said all chromosomes came back normal from amnio, but I still have to wait another 2-4 weeks for resukts for 1 specific test from amnio. Cells had to grow and now are being sent to NY. I had to go to office to give blood . I told Dr and office manager how upset I was with their phone call. Then i got even more upset because gender was revealed to me. We really wanted to wait for it to be a surprise. On the other hand I am very excited.
  • Sounds frustrating to me!! But glad everything is ok so far!! Fx for the last part. And I'd be pissed too about the gender since I'm team green too. <3

  • Only docs and nurses can give the test results and they cannot leave it on voicemails because of HIPAA
