Help me diagnose DD please

For the past couple of days, DD is not eating well.  She had been sucking down 4 or 4.5 oz bottles, but now I'm doing well to get her to take 2.5 oz at a time.  I am nursing some, but mostly doing bottles.  Yesterday she slept a ton, when she wasn't acting fussy.  She has been much more fussy than normal.  I know this may be normal behavior, but any ideas what might be going on?  She is 3.5 months old.  I wonder if she could be teething or maybe have a cold?  She has been sneezing a lot too.  I guess I'm just wondering if there is anything I can do to make her more comfortable.  I hate for her to be hungry, but she really will not eat much at a time.  Any ideas or suggestions?  I hate to see her feeling bad.  If only these babies could talk and tell us what's going on!

  • Does she have a fever?  I probably wouldn't go to the doctor if she doesn't have a temp - I would just keep an eye on her - sometimes they just have an off day.

  • No, she doesn't have a fever and her diaper output has been fine.  She fell asleep just sitting in my lap, which is unusual- I usually have to rock her.  I'm also wondering if maybe its a growth spurt?  I wouldn't be as worried about it, but I have to go to work tomorrow and I'm not going to have any idea what to tell her babysitter about how often and how much to feed her.

  • My lo was having trouble finishing bottles and was fussy at the breast.... I'd been eating york peppermint candies since Christmas. Apparently she doesn't like peppermint flavored milk. Lol. Maybe something you're eating she doesn't like the flavor.
  • DS just went through that. We all had colds and sore throats so I assume his throat was sore too and it hurt to swallow. Nose drops before each feeding seemed to help him take in a little more but he still cut his intake down by almost half for a few days. Like others said, if she doesn't have a fever and she has a normal amount of wet diapers just monitor her for a few days. Tell the babysitter to still offer feedings on the regular schedule, she may take her whole bottle at one feeding and only an ounce or two at the next. Have them keep track of how much she's getting for you. Hope she feels better soon.
  • My DD started doing the same thing I would think teething would make it uncomfortable to eat and as long as she doesn't have a fever and has enough wet diapers she should be fine. I'd mention it at the next appointment though.

DD has a stuffy nose and has been eating smaller bottles. I'd just keep an eye on her and tell her babysitter to let baby lead the way. If her diapers become less or it lasts for a long time I'd call the pedi.

  • Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions! She has gotten a little congested so I think it's a little cold. She seems to feel a little better now that she's napped so much. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
