STM, crib transitions

At what age did you start transitioning LO to the crib? I was thinking of starting between 6-8 weeks. Right now I'm still battling getting her to sleep off my chest at night, so we have a ways to go. She will do part of the night in the RNP. Day naps in her swing.

Someone tell me that the sleeping stuff gets easier as they get older?

  • We transferred L at 3 months. He was getting too big for the RNP. I lucked into an incredible sleeping baby, so it was pretty easy to make the move. He actual slept longer and quieter in the crib.

  • We transitioned to the crib once the baby was sleeping at least in 5 to 6 hours stretches, which was around eight weeks with DD1. Before that with the breastfeeding it was too much of a chore to go back-and-forth
  • Thanks, I know there's light at the end of the tunnel.... Longer sleep stretches, longer periods between feedings, hopefully easier time not sleeping on mommy.... Just gotta keep trucking through this first 6 weeks...

  • Mine don't ever go to crib. :-)

Mine don't either. We bedshare, then transition to a big kid bed.

  • We transitioned at 3 months. I started putting them in their crib during naps only so they were used to it by the time I put them in there at night time.
  • From the start.  For naps, he's in his crib usually unless we're out with the kids.  For nighttime sleep, I nurse and then put him in his crib.  If it's a night where he wakes up a lot, I'll take him to bed with me at some point.

  • We transitioned DD1 around 7-8 weeks. She had been in her PnP up till then. She had no problems with the switch at all. Now, DD2 has been in the RnP since we brought her home -- she didn't seem to like the PnP for night sleeping very much. Hoping we don't have trouble transitioning her since the RnP is so snug....plan to try around the same time frame. I have been putting her in her crib for short periods daily and she seems okay with that, so we'll see.

Yep this is what we did. Started naps around 3-4 months then at night around 5-6. I thought about trying earlier this time but it's just so easy to bring then into bed to feed when they are right next to you!

  • With DS1 we did it between 6-8 weeks, when he was sleeping okay. This one may be transitioned sooner because he's so loud, but he still wakes up too many times to be in another room at this point.

  • We transitioned DD1 at 4-5 months.  It took a while, maybe because we waited so long, but we had her napping in there at 4 months and spending the night at 5.  We had her in our room until she was able to turn over consistently.

There's no right or wrong time to do it, but the sooner your LO is used to a flat surface, the better as far as ease of transitioning goes. Sleep stuff remains annoying until you've transitioned them into beds and they stop getting up/falling out... so maybe until they're 8 or 9 years old?  Dunno, haven't gotten to that point yet...

For DS we didn't move him into the crib until he was 9 months but that was mostly because he was getting up to nurse once a night and it was easier to have him in the room with us. (And because I was a nervous FTM and felt the nursery across the hall was a million miles away).

We won't keep DD in our room for that long. I'm thinking I'll move her around 6 months, give or take.

  • We started at 8 weeks with DS when he was sleeping 11p-7a. Naps around 6 weeks. But every baby is different! Do what works for you!

  • We also started at 7 weeks with DS.  I wanted him used to the crib before I went back to work.  He did great.  Hoping to start around 7-8 weeks this time.

  • I transitioned my twins to their cribs right before I went back to work at 6-8 weeks adjusted. It was really pretty smooth, but they always slept in a PNP in our room before that at night. Naps, they slept where ever, bouncy chair, swing, floor, arms...
  • We transitioned DS1 about 8 weeks... Once he got down to one wake a night (he was sleeping from about 10pm-4am at the time).

  • We transitioned to the crib between 10-11 weeks old with DS1. Until then he slept in the swing for naps and RnP for nights. This kiddo wants to sleep on someone at all times. He only lasts in the swing, bouncy or RnP for 15-30 minutes.
  • We transferred DD1 at 6 months because DH didn't want her to go into her nursery. She slept in a bassinet in our room. DD2 does not like the bassinett and has been in the RNP the last 2 nights so I'm thinking of transferring her at 4-5 months.
  • DS was 6 weeks. DD1 9 months. She was a terrible sleeper and shared a room with DS so we had to wait til she slept better.
This LO sleeps in the RnP and doesn't last more than 5 minutes in the crib so I don't see the transition happening any time soon!

  • He's been in a crib off and on since birth. He doesn't love it, but doesn't hate it either. We all prefer the RnP right now, but now that he's sleeping longer at night {KNOCK ON WOOD} we are going to move to the crib.
  • We also did it around three months. I started a little before that with naps and then worked up all night there. I waited because he was still nursing a lot at night before that. He started sttn around that time.

  • Give it a month or two, and LO will be absolutely okay sleeping on their own. DD co-slept with us until about two months. Then, we kept her PNP until she was rolling, so around 5-6 months. I just felt more comfortable with her right there by the bed, so I could hear her no matter what. We will probably do the same with DS, and it was a relatively easy transition to the crib for us.

Two babies, 11 months apart! We're in for a ride!
  • Thanks ladies, I think I'll table my worries and revisit trying closer to 2 months. That would give us about a month to work on it before I'm back at work at 12 weeks.
