One a day nappers

When does LO nap? K has been fighting his 9am nap for about a week now and I think it's time to transition to 1 nap a day. He used to nap 9-10:30ish and then 3-4 or 4:30 ish and it was working so well until about a week ago! He is tired and yawning by 9, but then takes like an hour or more to fall asleep when I put him down (no crying, just messing around and playing). Do I put him down at 11 and change his lunch to when he wakes? What if he doesn't wake until like 2? Do I wait till after lunch when he is a tired fussy mess? What do you ladies do? What's your nap schedule and do you have any advice for making the transition from 2 naps to 1? Thanks! Oh, and Mondays are his only full day at daycare where he gets 1 nap at 12 and usually only naps and hour and he is an absolute mess Monday evenings! I'm scared 1 nap will have him like that all the time. Is your LO extra fussy in the evenings? Thanks!

  • 12-2. like clock work. if she was awake in her bed for a little bit she wake sup at 230

  • Right now we do lunch at 12, sometimes even 11:30 so I am thinking after lunch might be best, I just know he will be a mess by 12:30 is he's yawning and tired at 9! Was it rough for anyone the first few days but then LO just kind of adapted and the crankiness subsided?

  • oh we eat lunch after she wakes up. she dosent like eating in the morning much like me

  • Dagny dropped her morning nap a few months ago. She just fought it so hard I quit trying to get her to take it. I SAH so Dagnys nap generally depends on when she wakes for the day. She's been sleeping until 8 recently so she goes down for her nap around 1. 5/5.5 hours is generally her max awake time.

If I were you I would try and gradually move his nap. Maybe try at 10 for a week then 11 then noon. I would try and give him a big snack before his nap until you can wait for after lunch.

  • DS will be ready for a nap anywhere between 10:30 and 12:30, depending on when he got up. I've been trying to push it to 12:30 because that's when his nap will be at preschool in a few months. I give him lunch at 12:00 if he doesn't go down before then, otherwise I give him lunch when he gets up (he sleeps for 3 hours).

  • Daycare actually did the transition for us really. She has her lunch around 11 and then they go down for a nap right afterwards. Unless she's sick, then all bets are off and she goes down in the morning but refuses an afternoon nap even though she's a fussy mess by that point.

  • On Monday, despite putting him down at just after 9, K didn't fall asleep until 11, slept till 12:30, and needed another nap at 4:30 and woke at 5 a fussy pitiful mess. He just fell asleep at 10:30 today so hopefully he will get a nice long one. I am pretty sure he will be a wreck this evening though. I hope he adjusts soon! Thanks for all the advice and shared experiences, it seems I've been lucky to get 2 naps out of him this long! Didn't realize I was so behind on the nap scheduling!

  • We have been on one nap a day since LO was 13 months. It is the schedule they follow at DC so we stick to it at home as well. They eat lunch at 11 am and nap from 12-2 pm. My LO only naps an hour to an hour and a half. Sometimes LO is fussy in the evenings but not every night. It usually has to do with how well she slept the night before as to how fussy/happy she is. Even on a bad night she rarely sleeps longer for her naps.
  • We follow the schedule that daycare has her on. She eats lunch around 10:45-11:00, goes down for a nap around 11:30 and will usually sleep till 1 or 1:30. (she also gets to daycare at 6:30) In the evenings she is tired and is ready to go to bed by 7:00. They just started cutting her morning nap out at daycare, she would only nap for about 45 minutes anyway.

  • We are at one. When she's at daycare it's from 11:30 to 1:30. When she's at home it's from 2-4. Just depends on where she is and how tired she is but we've been at one for a while now

  • Annika switched to one nap at about 12 months. She kept her morning nap, but refused to take an afternoon one. She goes down somewhere between 10 and 11 and sleeps around 2 hours. She has lunch after she wakes up. All of my kids have been morning nappers. If they take a nap in the afternoon, they don't fall asleep at night.

The transistion to one nap was a little rough on Will. His teacher said he would be falling asleep at lunch...but he finally adjusted after a week or so.

He's been back to two a day lately (at home, not at daycare) , though because he has been waking up around 4:30/5 every day for a month. Kill me.

  • Robert hasn't ever had a regular 2 naps a day since he was really little, but he used to nap in the morning and now it's in the afternoon. He used to wake up around 7 and then nap at 10-12ish, now he gets up around 7-8 and naps 12:30 or 1 to 3 or 4. Lunch before nap.

  • My LO just dropped the morning nap on their own about 4 months ago. Now he naps after lunch, but it's for about 2.5-3 hours at a time and it usually starts around 12:30.

This is us as well except he will go down anywhere between 12-2 depending on when he woke up.

  • Zayne will typically nap after lunch about 12/12:30-2:30/3. This week has been wonky with him having a cold but going down after lunch usually works best for us. It did take about a week for him to adjust not having the morning nap.
