Right hand/left hand?

Ok this may sound stupid but does your LO engage more with a certain hand? Mine constantly "waves" his left around, puts it in his mouth, rubs his nose, etc. He definitely favors the left for almost everything. My mom swears that it's way too soon to tell if a baby is right or left handed, so I am wondering if I am nuts or my baby is just weird. I don't think there is a problem with his right side because he wiggles it around great on the play mat and tummy time. He is 6 weeks 5 days. Has anyone else noticed this?

Re: Right hand/left hand?

  • Right hand more for waving, reaching, and sucking on! I wondered this the other day and DH said I was being crazy.

  • I don't think it means anything other than they are working their muscles on that particular side. My nephew favored left for everything, he's now 5 and right handed. We were all convinced he was a lefty since his dad is. My son favored left too as a baby but uses both now, he is 2.

Damn! I am hoping the left handedness sticks!

  • I was hoping you were going to talk about left/right breasts. I'm perplexed by my babies clear favorite boob- my right one. Only reason I can think of is because the nipple is more pronounced (I had it pierced in college.)
  • I haven't noticed (or looked for) preference in a baby this young.  I did notice dd1, now age 9, always grabbed at things with her left hand when she was 3-4 months. (I don't remember what age babies reach for things.) She is indeed left handed. I watched for it again with DD2 and she always reached with her right. She's 4 now and definitely right handed.

I didn't notice a preference till later. Like, I can say my 4 year old is right handed and my 3 year old is left handed, but I don't know which hand my 17 month old prefers yet, since she uses both.

  • Since I am a lefty and so are my In-laws, there is a higher probability for my kids. I read that the hand closest to the mouth for the most time starting in utero(!) is typically dominant. At 6m or so it occurred to me that my DD was right-handed and I looked back at her pics and in retrospect it was obvious since birth. Sure, she did the ambi thing, but right was 1st or most. I was going to look at DS' pics; he's 6w old yesterday.

    Wow! Very interesting!

  • I haven't noticed yet but I hope he's right handed like DH. I'm left handed and I've hated it since I was a kid and still do! Writing is annoying, can't use markers or paint and notebooks are a bitch to write in. Stupid coil hurts my hand.

This is the reason my parents didn't want me left handed. We have many lefties in my family. I favored my left hand as a child but my dad kept switching my crayon/ kid scissors to my right hand until eventually I was right handed. I'm glad he did it; I like writing/cutting right handed-- but my whole left side is still stronger.

I had heard the theory that handedness develops in utero! Interesting!
