I've been doing BLW and it's been going great! He's been feeding himself and he seems to know exactly what to do. I give him spears of sweet potato, pears, banana, carrots, avacado slices and he picks it up and chews it. He doesn't have any teeth. I also still give purees; I'm doing a mixture of traditional and BLW. I can't claim to be an expert on this and I'm still learning (and taking it exceptionally slow and with caution) but I'm enjoying it and I believe my DS is too! These are the resources that another mama on this board recently gave me:
Dd is 7 months now & feeds herself most of the time. She doesn't have any teeth yet but they can gum stuff amazingly well. I do a combo of purees & whatever I'm eating & finger foods. I started giving her puffs around 5 months. Mainly just as practice. She started picking then up shortly after. She's my 2nd kiddo & this time I was much more relaxed on giving foods.
We do a combo of BLW and jarred foods. I just give her food and see what she does with it. So far she's not a picky eater and grabs everything. No teeth here yet at 8 mo but she seems to have pretty good gums to mash it all up.
Just try things and see if LO will take it. It's all about experimentation!
Good luck and have fun and enjoy all the mess!
I guess my biggest worry is what size pieces to put on the tray. I mean, do we give them itty bitty pieces? Or pieces that my LO will chew on with his two teeth for a bit?

Scariest thing yet? Haha.
I kinda figured it out off of the link posted above. Chip sized...

It is scary. And baby WILL gag but it doesn't take them long to figure it out and next thing you know they are eating like a champ!! Right now my LO is eating a cucumber stick and a slice of mango. Think of a french fry or finger like shape so they have something to grab. Lots of wasted food but also lots of exposure to different tastes/textures.
