Crib to Toddler Bed

I apologize if this is a question that comes up a lot here. I'm thinking ahead to PT my son in a few months. I want him to be in a toddler bed by then so he can get up to use the potty at night. I'm thinking about going ahead and transitioning him so he's used to the new bed before we even begin potty training.

How do I get him to stay in the bed instead of getting up? Should I keep his bedroom door open so I know when he gets up, or should I close the door and let him figure it out?

can you get a cheap video monitor? Thats what we did. Just started the transition last night and dd stayed in bed all night!

We sat outside of our LO's door to make sure she didn't get out of bed, but we moved her to a toddler bed at 20 months. We started PT after that. Conquering the night PT we haven't done yet and I'm in no rush to do it.

I put a gate at his bedroom door since we like to keep his door open. Just knowing that it is there kept him from getting up most of the time.
