Comfort During Long Commutes

Hey Ladies! This is my first time jumping over on this board so first off hi, SO and I are expecting his 1st & 2nd and my 2nd & 3rd at the end of July! I'm sure I'll start spending more time here as I get further along and definitely once I get back to work.  I had a quick question for those of you who had or have longer commutes.  I spend about 3 hours a day, 1 1/2 each way commuting to and from work.  I'm already getting uncomfortable sitting in traffic, seems like everything is happening much quicker this time.  What advice or tips do you have for staying comfortable while making your way to and from work? Thanks so much!

Re: Comfort During Long Commutes

  • I had an hour commute during both of my pregnancies and it was tough. Wear comfortable shoes and try to do some stretching before you get in the car. I always made sure I had water and a snack with me and always go to the bathroom before you leave haha. Welcome to the board! How old is your first child and what career are you in?

  • DS is 5 now, he's so excited to be a big brother.  I work as a Customer Service Manager for an IT company, it's pretty demanding of my time so will be interesting to see how this pregnancy shakes it up.  Luckily I have some work from home capabilities that I'm hoping to start tapping into a little more frequently.

  • Hey there & welcome. Not sure how tall you are but I also have twins and I will tell you that I am short & couldn't physically drive in the 3rd trimester b/c I couldn't safely reach the pedals and was beyond uncomfortable (I was on modified bedrest starting at 26 weeks anyway but drove to appts as long as I could but at some point I couldn't do that anymore). Just a heads up if you are on the smaller side. Glad to hear you can WFH.
Definitely hydrate and stretch and you may want to stop part way & get out & walk around. I'd talk to your OB about thoughts on that length of commute as you get closer to the end...

  • I'm 5'6", I hadn't even thought about not being able to physically drive.  With my son I was good up until 38 weeks when I was induced with driving but I know with the twins I'm going to get bigger much faster.  So exciting but so much to think about.  I go in for my NT Scan on Friday so I'll probably mention my commutes to my OB.

  • Congratulations!  I would try to work from home periodically.  I have an hour commute each way and remember it being pretty miserable.  I started working from home on Tuesday and Thursday to break up the week a bit and that helped tremendously.
  • As far as not physically being able to drive, it depends on how you carry and probably the type of car. I drove a Jeep Cherokee up to 42 weeks, and I'm 5'1".

For comfort, I'd also suggest bringing a small pillow to put behind your lower back if you need it.

Another thing to consider is how far your work is from your OB or where you're going to deliver. Obvioulsy many multiple pregnancies go to term or close to it w/out any problems but we tend to think a lot more about the what ifs & potential for issues preterm. I would think at 5'6 you'll prob be fine as far as being able to reach but the discomfort in general might be rough toward the end.
