Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sleep through the night

How do you people do it? I've been reading down and I see some babies are sleeping 7- 10 hours straight through the night. My 2 1/2 old sleeps for 3 hr stretches through the night to feed like an alarm clock. During the night he takes naps but no more than 30 mins each. He is formula fed.

Any advice?

Re: Sleep through the night

  • I'm assuming you're talking about a two and a half week old.  The reason some people have babies who STTN is because every baby is different and those babies are very very much the exception.  Most babies don't sleep through the night for MONTHS and even up to a year old.

And even after a year old. My 18mo still wakes up once a night.
I was trying to be positive lol  My 3.5 wakes up most nights :)

  • its 2 months and a half.
  • We follow our daughter's cues, she is a month tomorrow.

Some nights she is up every 3 hours, some nights she sleeps 7 hours. When she wakes up at night, we feed her in a darkened room, speak in soft tones, and make sure our hands are warm & she wears pajamas that are easily accessible for diaper changes.

It's really important to listen to what your child is telling you, if they are hungry, feed them...don't watch the clock.
  • No advise....some babies sleep better than others. My DS slept 5 hours the first night home from the hospital and it scared the crap out of us. We then realized we needed to wake him to eat. Which is a crazy problem to have. But my DD2 was the opposite and would wake to eat and it would take 2.5 hours to feed and get her back to sleep to have her wake up a half hour later and do it again. And she slept poorly probably until the age of 4. Even now at 6 she wants to stay up late and get up at 4:30 in the morning. But she does STTN. Some kids just sleep better than others.

It just takes time. Until then good luck and try to take some naps!
  • My lo is 7 weeks 4 days, we got into a habit of him sleeping on me in the recliner and he would sttn ( down between 10 and 11:30 up at 3:30 to eat then up at maybe 5 then at about 7 to 9. I also had him nap in the Ewing because it worked so great. Well yesterday I tried to transition him to the pnp in our room and didn't work so well. He was up at 9:30 am and then till 1:30 am the next day it could only get him to sleep 2 times 30 minutes each. The first time I tried to put him down 50 minutes later after he woke for the day. He was so overly tired I felt awful! I tried everything, everytime I out him down sales he would be screaming 2 minutes later. Going to try swaddling him today. Hope this will hey better with time!!
  • Mine started out doing a 4 -3-3 stint at night, after 3 week growth spurt he began. 5-3-3 routine, now just out of 6 week growth spurt he's doing 7-4-3, I'm not doing anything other than follow his cues, and I'm waking him at 7 hours because I don't like the idea of him going longer than that. Regardless, every baby is different, all you can do is encourage it by using swaddled, darkened room, clean diapers, full belly, no gas. If all that is taken care of and they are still not going down they may just want you to hold them.
  • Mine's two months, and the longest she's ever slept was two and a half hours.  What has changed is that now during the night she goes right back to sleep after eating, while before she used to lie there grumbling and muttering to herself before falling asleep (which made it hard for me to sleep). So it's easier for me to fall asleep and get more sleep.  But full on unbroken sleep for more than 2 hours?  I've yet to see it.  (Sigh.)

  • DD is about 7 weeks, and has just started sleeping longer at night. We try to keep her up after 6 pm, give her a bath and feed before bed and she usually sleeps 4-6hours. After she wakes to eat, she's back to 2-3hours but that 1 long stretch makes a huge difference for me.
  • My DS didn't STTN until 11 months...

Like PP's said, do what your baby needs.

  • My DD was STTN (5 hrs) at 2 mos or so, but then I went back to work and she reversed cycled (EBF) and that was the end of STTN for a long while. GL.

Our LO technically sleeps through the night: 5 hours. That's the technical definition. She's been doing it for about a month now. Her sleep pattern is:

bedtime (somewhere around 10pm) - wake up in 5 hours for a feed (~3/3:30am), back down around 4:00-4:30, then up again around 6:30-7:00am and our day routine starts then.

Only a few times has she pulled a 7-8+ hour stint.
    This, exactly.

  • My LO is 12 weeks and has been STTN for about 4 weeks. We have a routine every night she takes a bath between 8pm-8:30. We get her out dress her in pjs read 2 books to her then swaddle & give her her last bottle for the night. She goes down about 9:30 and usually wakes between 6:30-8:30am. It seems like being swaddled helps her to sleep longer stretches. She usually cat naps 20-30 minutes 1-3 times a day and most days takes a 1-2 hour nap in the mornings.

  • My 2 year old didn't sleep through the night until he was 7 months old.  My 2 month old sleeps from 7:30 till 3:30/5:30 (sometime between then).  Every baby is different!

  • Ditto PP that each baby (like adults) is unique and that STTN means various things to different people. LO sleeps about 7 hours for his long stretch at night, but that's from 9-4am, meaning I still get up in what I consider MOTN. Then we start 2 hour cycles. Out of curiosity, how does your baby sleep during the day? Sleep begets sleep, but you also don't want baby having their long sleep stretch during the day.

He usually take 15-30 min naps through out the day and stays away 1 - 1 1/2 hr span.

A 2.5 week old and even a 2.5 month old should be eating multiple times during the night. Don't listen to others, just do what YOUR baby needs.

Agree. Your baby is an individual.

You are doing nothing wrong. Hang in there, sleeping stretches will improve as LO gets older but don't compare to any other baby, like, EVER, because they all meet sleeping and developmental milestones at different times.
