Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone use probiotics?

At my girls one month well check yesterday, our pedi recommended giving them probiotics. She gave me some samples and recommended Gerber Soothe (which I ordered on Amazon yesterday).

If you use them, have you noticed a change in your baby?

Both my girls are very gassy and one spits up.

Re: Anyone use probiotics?

  • No.  All of my kids have been EBF.

If a baby is born vaginally, they're getting a first round of good bacteria passing through the birth canal.  If a baby is EBF, they're getting antibodies and plenty of more good gut bacteria.  There's no need to give a baby probiotics.

  • You're going to have to figure out where you stand on probiotics. We don't give probiotics. We tried them for a period to see if they helped with ds2's eczema. I took them first to see what they would do to me. They didn't do anything that I could tell, and they certainly didn't do anything for ds2's eczema.
You say they have gas and one spits up. You'll find 100 posts on the same topics if you search this board. These are both SO NORMAL for infants. Why are you trying to treat something that's normal? I don't mean to sound condescending. I'm just curious why you think these need correcting?

  • We tried the Gerber soothe drops with DS.  They were really expensive and I don't think they did anything at all.  We won't keep using them.

  • Normal doesn't necessarily mean natural. Adults taking probiotics have boosted immune systems since most of it is in the gut. We don't produce these bacteria on our own, and babies certainly aren't born with them. Taking antibiotics can kill good and bad bacteria. Over time you can have a deficit of good bacteria if you don't replenish. If Mama doesn't have much, how is she going to pass it along to baby? I'd say take some yourself as well as giving some to LO a few times a week and see how it goes. You won't notice a huge change in yourself, but you may in baby. I give my LO probiotics and he rarely spits up and passes gas easily...and has regular bowel movements.

  • Ingesting a probiotic is unnatural to me.  So...  there's that.  Spit up and gas are normal and natural to me.

Also, in these adults with the boosted immune systems after taking probiotics, what kind of diet are they ingesting on a regular basis?

I'm more of a fix your plate to boost immunity rather than an introduce supplements and like to boost immunity and continue to eat crap.  High fiber plant foods feed good bacteria.  I'll keep my crazy great immune system and my high fiber fruits and vegetables...  you keep your Activia.

Also, in my first post, I wrote incorrectly.  Colostrum is what gives good bacteria.  OP mentions nothing about her LOs being on antibiotics.  So...  that point is irrelevant.

OP, see?  Figure out where you stand on probiotics and talk to your LOs' pedi some more and make a decision for yourself.  I don't think you can go "wrong" either way, you just have to figure out what you feel is "right" for your family.
