So... Just got the bassinet that we registered for (rock n play portable bassinet) in the mail today (a nice gift from my parents).

We're excited about it but it was just released that it may have a mold concern. Just wondering if any of you have experience with this or advice? I don't want to over worry about it and am not looking forward to finding an alternative/ shipping it back. :-/ wwyd?

Edited for weird smiley being inserted accidentally.

Re: Fisher price rock n play sleeper recall

  • I think it's just a matter of cleaning it properly... I believe the issue was if baby spit up and it wasn't cleaned well- mold could grow between the fabric and the plastic underneath? Well, duh... That can also happen with swings, car seats, bouncy seats, etc. anyway, read the actual recall notice or call FP with any questions to be sure I'm remembering correctly? For me, it wouldn't be enough to not use it but I'm also pretty diligent about cleaning up thoroughly after a spit up/blowout.

  • If it's recalled I would exchange it. I know that the chances of something happening are probably slim, but if something does happen because of the product, and you didn't return it to the recall, I believe that removes any liability from the company down the road. Also, I just wouldn't want to chance it personally.

I agree with this on recalls where their is a real product issue but in many cases it's a matter of the manufacturer inspecting the product and issuing new warnings to prevent an issues. Kind of like when they recalled the bumbo seat... They didn't change the product at all, they just added new warning labels on proper use (don't set it on the counter or table top, don't leave baby unattended, etc). No need to return it for these recalls- just read the new warnings and follow.

  • Thanks for the info. Funny thing is, I literally JUST finished putting this together. Sigh...lol. It's just a matter of making sure you always keep it clean and check the shell frequently.

    Thanks for the link @desirrek

As far as I know it's just this one. But if you're concerned, check for your model online. If there is a recall, it should come up.

Eta: I'd never seen the snugapuppy one until just now. (Looked it up) That is adorable!

  • Thanks ladies- sorry I didn't post the link sooner. Stinks to have to worry about another thing but oh well. It doesn't really specify which models are included but I assume the bassinet is because the bottom is hard plastic and the pad is plastic lined so it can't breathe. I guess the plus is it's easily wiped down. At least it's not something we need to use for a long stretch.
  • I have the yellow one (2 of them) and have never had a mold issue. I used them for the first 5 months with ds, 4 years ago and they are in excellent condition. Easily washable.

You can ignore this by just going back and reading mab18's comment, sorry I missed it the first time.

The recall announcement occurred a year ago.  (Almost to the day, January 8 2013, just thought that was neat.)  It didn't affect all the Rock n Plays then, here is the wording from the recall announcement:

Units currently in retail stores are not affected by this recall to inspect. Only products that show signs of mold after use by consumers are included in this announcement.   I would assume in a year's time, they have adjusted the cleaning instruction on the Rock-n-Plays being sold now, which really was the only problem to begin with, and as long as you follow them, you should have no issues with mold.  Either way, your Rock-N-Play is as safe as you allow it to be.  I encourage anyone who already has one to keep it, as it is a convenient place to set your kid down for a bit while you shower or bath or do something that needs arms.

  • I have this one from DS #1 and the recall is no big deal. Even if you do have mold on it (incidentally, ours didn't and it's 3 years old), you can just follow the cleaning instructions on FP's website.

  • If you dry the cover completely off the frame when you wash it or get it soaking wet, you'll be fine.

  • Thanks again everyone. Really encouraging. I know it's not a true recall but more of a warning, I just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with it and if I should be more concerned than I am. I'll definitely be cleaning it and checking just in case :)
  • Dirty lurker here. I had an older style rock and play for my first son. (Tan circles). I heard about the recall when pregnant with my second son but there was no mold. I checked it frequently and up until a month ago it was fine. Then I found mold. No idea how it got there. My second son never had a diaper leak or spit up when he was in it. I also washed it a few times since he was born but made sure it was completely dry. When I found the mold, I did some research and called fisher price. They have changed how it is made to prevent mold. They first gave me cleaning instructions and said I needed to clean it once a week to prevent mold. As a full time working mother of 2 under 3 I said this would be difficult and could they assure me that if I followed instructions, that there would never be mold again. They could not and offered me an exchange or a refund. I took the refund since my son currently sleeps in it. We went out and bought a new one that day. Fisher price emailed me a shipping label and I returned the old one to the post office and received a check in the mail about 2 weeks later. If you are concerned, I'd recommend calling fisher price. You can give them the model number and they will tell you if your specific one was recalled. I was very please by their customer service. They were very polite and did not give me any trouble.
