Born at 38 Weeks?

So my sister just went into labor and she is only about 38 weeks. They told her that her baby was big at her last appointment and they may have gotten her due date wrong. They've been telling her she might be early the last few weeks. She is under 18 so I am a little worried about her the baby. I live about 1800 miles away and we just got the call so I am kinda stressing out. I love her a lot and I already love this baby a ton. I am just kinda worried that everything will be okay. I am trying to be happy and excited but 2 weeks early sounds scary. I know a lot of babies are born MUCH earlier and they are fine but still...

Am I being silly?

38 weeks is considered term and pretty safe for baby to be born at this point. Most babies at this age do as well as a full term baby and the risks of there being complications due to baby's age are pretty small. There is always risk but that is true for every pregnancy and delivery, I'm sure she is in good hands. Congrats!

Full term pregnancy is actually 39 weeks. That said, many babies are born healthy at 38 or earlier. An early birth doesn't automatically mean there will complications for her or her baby. FWIW my boys were born at 37 weeks, no issues aside from jaundice and a small delay in my milk coming in. I hope she has a good L&D!

Not anymore.  ACOG recently changed the guidelines and 37 weeks to 38 weeks 6 days is now early term.  Full term is 39 weeks.

Baby should be perfectly fine at 2 weeks. My water broke at 38 weeks and I had DS via c-section (repeat/planned) and he's doing great. He did have some breathing issues at first but that was more due to the c-section than him being early and he was fine within 24 hours. He was born at 7lbs 10oz.

Good luck and congrats to your sister!
