Weaning Moms

edited January 2014 in June 2013 Moms
I have a couple questions about the weaning process. If your in the middle of it or BTDT.
I'm trying to figure out how long to give myself if I want LO weaned by his 9 month birthday at the beginning of march?
Also wondering how the LO's are taking it?Are they having a hard time not nursing or always taking the bottle?
And lastly is anyone just day weaning and still trying to BF at night/morning? And how's that going?

Feel free to just answer whatever applies, I'm just curious. And this board is dead!!!! Thanks ladies ;)

Re: Weaning Moms

  • I'm trying to keep the morning and night, making those the last to go. I try adding a bottle a week. Currently, Lily is sick and will not take much of the bottle and wants to comfort nurse a lot. We have regressed, but I'm hoping progress will resume as I hate pumping at work.

  • I'm trying to start this process too. Right now, we've replaced 2 mid day feeding with expressed milk and I only pump once. I've noticed a hit on my supply which is sad to me, but I know That once I go back to work in February, I won't be able to keep up due to my schedule.

My goal was 6 months and I think it will be about 8.5 by the time all is said and done. Maybe a check in for weaning moms might be a good idea.

  • I went cold turkey with DS.  Worst decision ever.

I do have a friend who is currently weaning her daughter who is 9 months old.  She is dropping a feeding a week and that seems to be working for her so far.  She is also trying to keep the bedtime/morning sessions and is three weeks in so she does 2 daytime pumpings and then BF bed and morning without any issues yet.

  • I'm in the process. It's hard. A lot harder than I thought it'd be. R pretty much refuses the bottle from me. Especially if it's formula. He'll take it from anyone else, except me. He'll claw at my shirt if I tried to feed him a bottle. We cut out our morning nurse/pump a few weeks ago bc it was just too hectic with me trying to get out of the house by 6:30. He's been taking that bottle fine for DH ever since, but gives me the hardest time.

I started only pumping twice at work and supplementing more of his bottles during the day with formula. In another week or two I'm going to try cutting down to pumping only once. I'm still BFing him when I get home and overnight if he wants to eat. I'm hoping by the time he's completely weaned we can cut out MOTN feedings too.

  • I kept the morning and night pumping, also I did MOTN feeding. I cut my pumping out during the day first. Then I stopped the night feedings. I finally cut my morning pumping yesterday when the day before I only got 1 oz out of a pumping session. I still get engorged by the end if the day but the pain is low and I can handle it. I'll express some if get its to painfull!

  • I've been working on weaning LO too.

My schedule is something like this:
    6:45AM: Nurse
    1PM: Pump at work
    7:30PM: Nurse
    MOTN Feedings: Nurse

Hopefully we can cut out the MOTN feedings entirely so I can stop making milk then! My LO will sleep through the night for three nights for example, my supply drops because I am not doing 1-2 MOTN feedings, and then she will be up in the night for the next couple of nights and my supply comes back up. What I pump corresponds pretty well to this pattern. Its hard to wean and make less and less milk if your number of feedings are erractic from day to day. I've basically cut out most daytime feedings on the weekend at this point though and do bottles instead. LO doesn't seem to mind.
  • Thanks for all the responses ladies. It breaks my heart if I ever try to give LO a bottle and I can tell he wants to nurse. It will be great for the days I go to work but hard on the days I SAH with him. Ahhh if I cut out a session a week it would take almost 2 months for him to be weaned. I better get to making up my mind.
