Baby's growth %

I'm sorry if this has been asked or if this is one of those "annoying" questions. But anyway..What is your baby measuring right now? I have a follow up growth ultrasound next week because she is in the 75th percentile. If you've already had your baby, were they close to guessing the correct size?

Re: Baby's growth %

  • Last Friday, this kid was in the 36th percentile for weight and 83rd percentile for height -- just like his 6'5.5" 180lb dad.
  • Loading the player...
  • At 32w, I had an ultrasound to check the location of my placenta and they guessed LO was in the 95th percentile for size at almost 6lbs. Yesterday, at my 37w appointment, my midwife felt the baby and guesstimated that he was average sized, mid 6-lbs. Obviously, neither of these methods are 100% accurate, but I have heard that midwives are generally pretty good at telling by feeling. I guess only time will tell!

  • I had a growth scan at 35w1d, and DD was estimated to be 4lb11oz (+/- 11oz). She was born about two weeks later at 37w, and she was 5lb3oz. I don't remember how much weight babies gain the last month of pregnancy, but I'm guessing she was within that range of the growth scan. So, I'd say it was basically accurate. I knew DD would be a little baby.

  • Ya my midwife did the tape measure and I was 2 weeks ahead, so I guess that would be about the same. I was 6lbs 6oz at birth and my boyfriend was almost 9 pounds, maybe she's just taking after him. They said she had long legs too, which is definatly not from me at only 5 feet, with Trex like limbs!
  • @peanutmuse Holy crap, those are monster baby shoes. Lol. Wow.

    @peanutmuse YH is 6'5.5''? Yowzers!

@arya808, yup. And thin as a rail. This kid's legs are really long and he has big feet, just like his dad. A while back, I posted a pic of my husband's baby shoes. Those old school white ones that kids wore in the 70s and early 80s when they were learning how to walk, you know? He was probably 12-18 months or so when he wore them, and the shoes that are next to them are a pair of shoes I was wearing over this past summer. :)

Oh wow that is amazing. Cute but funny pic. Yeah I always wonder how long our LO will be and his feet size, ha ha!! I'm 5'10 and DH is 6'1. I've just had the measurements where they take the tape measure also and measure what Arya said. The numbers are always average and not concerning, so I never had a growth scan etc. Dont babies grow about a half pound a week the last month or so inside the womb!?!?

@peanutmuse 12-18 months? Holy crap! In Brazil we would say that your husband must have drunk bamboo tea as a baby :)
@arya808 -- I have no idea what that means, but it still made me giggle.  I'm guessing bamboo tea makes you big or something?
  • My OB didn't give me percentages, but baby boy was measuring about 1.5-2 weeks ahead in all categories at my growth scan last week. My OB thinks he'll be about 8-8.5 pounds when he's born. With DD, she estimated about the same, and she was born 7lbs 14oz.

Gotcha. That makes much more sense than what I said, haha.
  • I just got back from my growth ultrasound and baby girl is "above the 99% percentile" and estimated to be 8lbs 8oz at 36w5d.  Good times.

  • I had my last ultrasound at 34 weeks and baby was measuring around 6lbs, 3oz and in the 74th percentile. No idea where he is at this point but he was pretty consistently measuring about a week ahead most of my pregnancy, and docs think he will be big but not crazy huge.

  • I was told my baby was measuring small and in the 11th percentile just before my 38th week induction. He was small at birth, weighing only 5lbs 5oz, but completely healthy.

  • Around 29 weeks (maybe) baby was in the 57% percentile and 3lbs. Then around 33+ weeks the fundal (sp?) height was a week+ behind but no concerns. I had a growth scan the following week and baby suddenly was in the 19th percentile 4lbs 3oz (cue freakout) but OB wasn't too concerned as long as she is over 10% but decided on weekly BPP (every other week is a growth scan) and fetal NST. As of last Friday (36w+), she is at the 18th percentile and almost 5.5lbs so she is keeping at her own growth rate. From the US point of view - the cord and placenta seem to be working well. Although the OB's guess is the placenta having some issues for the sudden decrease in growth. No signs of any concerns on the US - but I am not sure if this is always very accurate (I need to ask the OB Friday). The OB mentioned induction if growth wasn't progressing but like I said, she is keeping up with her new growth spurts so she is just a tiny thing. I go again Friday but the OB didn't think I would last more than a few days last Friday before going into labor - but as I learned from reading posts - it all means nothing. He said he would be shocked if I am there on Friday so it is looking like I get to shock my doctor. I normally understand wanting to make it full term but after pelvic rest all first trimester, and weeks 19-21 weeks then bed rest from 21-36 weeks thanks to my lack of cervix and now to worry about her size, I just want her where she is safest. I don't know with my history if I trust my body to be the best thing for baby and it is very frustrating and scary. (Sorry...this turned into a little bit of a vent). I just keep telling myself if she is small - she may fit in all those newborn outfits longer!

  • I don't have percentiles, but I measured 40 cm (which is equivalent to 40 wks I guess) at my 38 week appointment. DD also measured consistently 2 weeks ahead. She was 8lb7oz born 37w4d. This LO is coming via RCS on Thurs, 39w1d. They say the kiddos grow 1/2 lb a week at the end, so I may have over 9lb of sweet baby rolls this weekend! :)
  • I measured around 9.5 pounds at 36w3d. I delivered a 9 pound 9 ounce baby at 38w5d, so fairly accurate. Growth ultrasounds are not a perfect science.

@sugarland726- This makes me feel much better.  Although MFM (the same place I went today) estimated DS1 to be just under 8lbs at 35w and he was born 9.5lbs at 38w0d, so that was pretty spot on.  My induction isn't until 39w1d with this baby, so I'm expecting her to be maybe a little bigger than DS1.  I can totally handle that.  Not really sure about a 10+ pounder though, lol.  I guess we'll see!

  • With DD1 i had an ultrasound the day b4 she was born at 36 weeks. They were right on the money at 6 lbs 7. 95th%. Just had a scan monday and they estimate this LO is 7lbs 11. 67th%. Scheduled induction Monday, so we will see...
  • Nugget was in the 95th percentile at the 20 week ultrasound. My OB wants another ultrasound next week to check on things. She said because I have a long torso, she's "not sure how much baby I'm hiding in there." We'll see how things turn out. I won't be surprised if this kid takes after me - I was huge (over 10 lbs at 38 weeks).

There's really no other point to this post other than to say I'm curious too :-)

@mrsjenni, I'm very curious to hear Baby IV's size! I find growth ultrasounds interesting and after finding out the sex of the baby, my next question was "how big??"

  • At 33 weeks baby was 4lbs, 1 oz and in the 40th percentile. Two weeks ago at my 37 week apt., the Dr. said he was measuring 2 weeks behind, but that it wasn't cause for concern as both my DH and I are small ourselves. Last week at my 38 week apt., the midwife filling in for my Dr. said there is a good size baby growing in there and she believes he is already around 7 lbs and that I wasn't measuring behind. I ended up going in for an ultrsound and they estimated he was 6lbs, 6 oz and if he goes to 40 weeks he will be in the mid-7's. So I guess who knows what he will end up being, but he is definitly growing!

@sugarland726- Me too!  And my babies are so chubby that all the OB's and nurses in there are ALWAYS taking bets... like "that baby HAS TO BE 10 pounds!"  LOL!  Not yet (and not too sure I want one of those anyway... I like my nice 9 pounders.)

  • Just had a growth ultrasound and he is measuring 8 lbs 9 ounces and I'm only 38w2d. My vag pretty much wants to curl up into a ball and cry. Hopefully it's not too accurate, but my fundal height has been measuring 2 weeks ahead. AND I'm not dilated at all whatsoever so this kid wants to stay put and probably be a 10 lb baby. Yikes :/

  • I had an u/s at 35 weeks to check fluid levels, and was in the 50%. My OB thinks this one will be 8-9 pounds. If that's the case, I will have given birth to a 7, 8, 9, 10 lb baby.

The end is in sight! We'll find out how big baby is sometime between now and next Tuesday.

  • They haven't been giving me any percentage- just that they're guesstimating LO to be around 8lbs so I'm guessing that's average? I can't use DH and my birth rates as a field of reference since we were both preemies at 35 weeks.

  • LO has measured 99% this whole pregnancy. Our last growth scan showed her weighing 8lbs 5oz. I was supposed to have an u/s at 38W, but my appt on Monday was cancelled due to the weather. We are rescheduled for Friday. I have a feeling their guesstimates are accurate but we wont know for sure until she arrives.
  • The last growth u/s I had was at 34wk2d, and he measured around 5lb3oz, which was ~65%. I have another growth u/s on Thursday, so we'll see if that's changed any then. Dr was estimating around an 8lb baby if I go to term. I'm fine with that. :)

  • I was supposed to have a growth ultrasound yesterday, but went into labor instead. At my last, 3 weeks ago, he was in the 80 something percentile, measuring a couple weeks ahead. They kept telling me I was going to have a big baby and I was pretty scared. LO was born this morning, 4 days late, and was only 7.5lbs. They scared me for nothing.

  • If I wouldn't have delivered at 33 weeks 5 days having a baby weighing 5 pounds 4 oz than (according to the doctor) I would have had a 9 pound baby!

  • @shelbiemarie123 I had my ultrasound today and my boy was measuring a whopping 38w5d in the 90th percentile, weighing in at 6.13lbs! I am currently 2cm dilated and baby is head down and engaged! I am 37w3d currently and have experienced contractions at 12 min apart, but because I'm not dilated enough, I am still being sent home! Hopefully your LO comes soon!
  • On 12/23/2013 I was told she was 5 lbs 5 oz (35th percentile). I delivered on 12/28/2013 and she was 6 lbs 5 oz and I'm not sure what percentile.
