Flat head

My LO is on his back a lot! He sleeps that way , chills that way, plays that way. He just likes being on his back. I was happy about it at first but now I'm seeing the balding spot from laying on his head and am afraid he will have a weirdly shaped head. Is that the worst that could happen? We started tummy time last week (week 6) and he hates it! Will last five minutes at most before screaming!

Re: Flat head

  • The back sleeping has led to an increase in plagiocephaly, and helmet prescriptions.  They're really expensive as not many insurance plans cover them.

It's pretty normal for a baby to lose their baby hair.  Hell, my black haired infant is now blonde.  His full crazy ass head of black fur fell out and in came blonde curls.  Don't stress about the hair falling out.  Watch for any change in skull shape and bring it to the attention of your pediatrician.

When he's playing give him ten minutes of looking to the right (put something visually stim'ing on that side), then flip him (put his head where his feet were) and make him look in the other direction.

Do that in his crib, too.

Always bring these concerns up to the pedi if it's something that really bothers you.  It's not really common, but occasionally flat head can cause concerns.
