1st Trimester

8 weeks, constant nausea: please help!

This is my first pregnancy, I'm about 8 weeks pregnant, and I have this awful nausea which lasts all day. I have read several other posts and articles with good suggestions, but so far not much is helping. I have noticed that it subsides for a little while (maybe 15 minutes) if I eat, but in order to head off the sick feeling I have to eat literally every 20-30 minutes.
I'm very small to begin with and my stomach has never been able to eat a lot. I also have a pretty high metabolism so I'm not sure if maybe whatever I'm eating is just getting burned off too quickly, but eating so often is making me not feel well on top of the all day sickness.
I have tried ginger supplements, B6 vitamins, dry toast, saltines, smoothies, fruit, yogurt, sucking on hard candy, OTC nausea meds, everything I have heard may work. My first appointment with my doctor isn't for another week, so I don't know if I should call them or not. I just know I can't stay this sick. I get lightheaded when I walk around, nauseous when I sit up... Please help!

Re: 8 weeks, constant nausea: please help!

  • I am 9 weeks and was dealing with a lot of nausea weeks 6 to 8.  What worked for me is drinking a lot of water and eating whatever I craved.  I typically stick to a vegan diet, but for some reason Mac & Cheese sounded good last weekend, so I went for it.  Also, I made sure it eat every 2 hours even if I wasn't hungry because I knew the nausea would be returning.  Cheerios sit well in my stomach first thing in the morning and then 2 hours later I have a whole wheat bagel with PB.  Hope you feel better soon, you will!!! :)

  • As I move through the weeks, I find what works at that moment (cravings)- but protein is always good.

    Lately, I've been eating:

    string cheese
    avocado (thanks, Prim)
    eggs
    peanut butter on celery/bananas/apples
keeping lots of fluids in me
Core Power protein shakes (no soy)

It helps and if I keep it as high protein as possible, I only eat every 3 hours or so- which isn't much different than pre-pregnancy.

My friend tells me that mild exercises like short walks help her to feel better. Once I get over the croup, that's what we'll be doing.

  • I always keep saltines or some other cracker on my nightstand so I can eat 2 or 3 right when I get up.  I carry them with me, they're low cal and it really only takes one or two to help.

At your doctor appt. if it's still really bad, ask for zofran

  • So sorry you're feeling this way! Have you tried taking the B6 vitamins with a unisom tablet? It can make a big difference for some women. I also drank a lot of Powerade (grape is my favorite). It has B6 vitamins, so those plus the electrolytes gave me an extra boost.

What kind of hard candy have you tried? I found that sour candy worked the best, but was only truly effective on milder days. War Heads, particularly lemon flavored, were the most helpful.

Also ditto to asking your doctor about Zofran should you feel like you need it.
  • i also had horrible nausea through out the first trimester but once i started taking a half of a unisom pill at night it helped a lot!!  I also found that i felt better as long as i had something in my stomach and ate things with lots of protein in them!!  Welcome to being pregnant and thankfully 2nd trimester is a lot better:)

I was in that same boat with my first and ended up losing 6 pounds but I was already under weight to begin with. My DH had to call the dr to make an appointment because the nurse kept blowing me off since it was my first pregnancy. My dr immediately prescribed zofran and said that if I didn't start getting food into my body that they would have to look at hospitalizing me. If you are not able to function because you are sick (and nothing else has worked) then please call your dr and insist that you need to see him/her ASAP. Though your body still gives whatever nutrients you are able to bring in to the baby it's still important for you to take care of yourself for you. I really hope you feel better!

  • Thanks for all the advice! My husband is picking me up some B6 and unison to see if that helps, but if it doesn't I will call the doctor. I called into work today because I was too nausesus to stay out of bed. Standing up to get ready is like waiting to vomit.
  • I'm so sorry you feel so bad. Hopefully you will get some relief soon!

  • Earth mama/angel baby brand morning wellness tea, and seabands! That helped me my second pregnancy. Seabands are bracelets that use pressure points to relieve nausea (walgreens and Walmart have them in the pharmacy over by the Dramamine) :)

  • I'm the same way (at 5-6 weeks) and something weird that helps me a lot is before I even sit up in bed I eat about 2 slices of watermelon (yes, laying sideways). Its hydrating and supposed to help with nausea. Some mornings it helps, and others it gives me something easy to throw up so my stomach isn't empty. Staying hydrated is key also, I went to the hospital last weekend and they gave me an IV for dehydration (I was throwing up anything I drank) and I felt instantly better. I've also tried Zolfran for emergencies (i.e. having to get to work) and its amazingly helpful. Lots of sleep and eating carbs & protein has helped me too, but every day is a surprise :S I hope you feel better soon!
  • You may have HYPEREMESIS of pregnancy which is a severe form of morning sickness. I was Diagnosed with this. I was prescribed Zofran and Phenergran. I'm not gonna lie I still feel awful sometimes but I've found that with these I can manage the day. *my DR said I was severely dehydrated, which causes the overwhelming tiredness.
