Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

18 month old language

My son is 18 months and is cared for by his grandmother during the day who only speaks minimal English (her primary language is Turkish).  My family is adamant that he needs to go to daycare to improve his English language skills.  The set up with his grandmother watching him seems to be working for now as daycare where I live is very expensive (over $500 per week), but if it is causing his language to be delayed I will definitely send him.

I was just curious where other 18 months are with language?  He says the following words: Mama, Dada, NeNe (grandma in Turkish), names of 3 other family members, car, tree, cookie, tv, doggy (he says it like gaga but he knows how to identify a dog and say it), Coco (name of a dog he sees daily), belly.  There may be a few more words I'm forgetting. He also repeats a lot of words I say to him, so he is trying. He doesn't say any words in Turkish apparently.

Is his language on target or is he maybe behind?  I have no experience with toddlers so I don't know what is normal.  I also try to read to him and point at objects in books, but he will not sit, climbs out of my lap, throws the book, etc. so it is hard to help develop his language in this manner. Any advice is appreciated!

Re: 18 month old language

  • So is he being taught Turkish and English?  Usually children who learn two languages are a bit slower to talk than children who learn just one learn language.  Even if he isn't actually speaking Turkish hearing both every day will probably make it a little harder for him.  Has he had his 18 month well check?  Did his pedi have any concerns?

Honestly, I don't think he sounds particularly delayed.  My DD has a speech disorder and she didn't start saying her first word until 18 months.  I'd maybe re-evaluate around 2 or if you notice a huge drop off in his word production but I think he sounds normal at this point.  I would say keep with your current setup and then maybe he can do part time preschool when he's 2 or something.  Hope that helps!

  • I think he sounds fine. DS didn't have that many words at 18 months, and we're a one-language household. I'd give it a few more months and see where he is then.

  • I think he sounds fine, it sounds as if he uses those words enough and as PP said 8 to 15 words regularly at that age is good.

FWIW, here is what our pedi said: "normal speech for an 18 month old is 5-8 words that he uses to communicate (not just mimic). By 21 months, 10 words. By 24 month, 20-30 words and starting to link 2 words together.

The pedi emphasized that the words don't have to be perfectly clear, but DS should be using them to communicate with us, not just saying them when I ask him to.

DS isn't in a daycare either. He stays with my cousin 3 days a week and my mom 2 days a week. I'm more concerned about the socialization aspect but I try to get him out and exposed to lots of different situations and people.

5-8 words at 18 months sounds low.  "Word" is loosely defined but normal is about 10-20.  Most 2 year olds know 50-100 words and use simple or partial sentences.

OP, I think your LO sounds fine given he is in a dual-language environment.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • i agree with pps.  your little one seems like he's doing fine.  like others, i stressed about language (we are a three language household) but pedi thinks they're ok.
  • This sounds totally normal and similar to my DS.  The pedi said he should have about 5-6 words other than mama and dada at 18m.

My son had about 10 words at 18 months and now says over 50 at almost 20 months.  Similarly, he is watched by a non-english speaking grandma.  The majority of his words are in English but he does say some other non English ones.  I do more reading with him and try to model some games, etc for my MIL which she has started to pick up.  DH and I plan on putting him in some kind of nursery school around 2-2.5 yrs old to help him get some socialization and help with other language/developmental needs.

  • I agree with pp. He sounds like he is doing fine. He even has the advantage of learning another language as a very young child.

  • I actually forgot some words (hi, bye, light and hot) so I think he is probably ok!  Thanks for the reassurance everyone!!
