placenta encapsulation: i'm going to do it!

nothing much to talk about that goes beyond the title of the thread...  i just decided tonight that i want to eat my placenta :)  yum yum!  bring on the high iron levels, lowered risk of PPD and potentially increased milk supply (via anecdotal evidence, of course...)

question too:  those who are doing it - what is the cost of the service?  mine will be $175 (usually $200) and i want to gauge where that falls in the spectrum.

I want to do it too, but I haven't gotten as far as finding out all the info on it like where to go and how much, ect.. Guess I should start..

  • I've been looking into it and everything I've found is around $200. I'm doing it too even if my husband thinks I'm a bit nuts ;)

  • I am also looking into this! My husband thinks I am disgusting, which I don't even understand because he knows why cows eat their afterbirth. The lady that does it around here charges $200. I have an appointment with my midwife next Wednesday and plan to talk to her about getting my placenta at the hospital, then I will contact the lady who does the encapsulation and speak with her about it.

  • Just throwing this out there since it's not for everyone. One of my friends didn't want to pay to get it done so she just took her placenta home, chopped it into tiny pieces and used it in smoothies. She said you couldn't even taste it.

I think it is neat when women do that.  I have seen cows eat the placenta after giving birth and I have never heard a single cow complain of PPD.

Hahahahaha! I didn't even see this comment until after I posted mine!

Woah woah woah! So many of my Bump BFF's are coming out of the placenta encapsulating closet! Well, I guess I can't think only crazy crunchy rainbow-wearing hippies do it anymore. Enjoy eating your organs, ladies! No one's down for a placenta smoothie? Or sushi? :D

I'll echo the above, and say I didn't see this until I posted mine. :D

  • I'm open to the pills but the smoothies or cupcake placenta eating isn't something I can stomach.

  • I'm thinking about it as well. It's about 150 around here depending on who does it. Seems like there are a lot of people in my area that so it and are somewhat professional placenta encapsulators. I could not eat it raw. I have a hard time even eating meat in general, but the pills sound like a really good idea to me. I didn't do it with DD, but am definitely interested.
  • I totally want to do this, but there isn't anyone in my area that does this. It's much easier with a doula, right?
I think it's great you are doing it and I hope it helps!
  • I spent 200! No regrets!!

  • I have a lot of friends that have done it and they all swear by it. I'm still thinking about it, definitely open to the idea. :)
  • I am so on the fence about doing this. I have a family and personal history of anxiety and depression and am really concerned about PPD, so anything I could do to help seems like a good idea. But, I don't know if I could be that *hippy-ish* :)

Glad you ladies are going for it, though!

  • I've been totally thinking about
It also. But i have to search around my area
  • I think we are going to do it too!  My DH is all about it, but we've decided we aren't going to go around sharing the news to friends and family.  Judgement? No thanks.  I don't want to hear it.  Ours looks like it's going to be about $200 too.
  • I'm doing it as well -- $200 is also the going rate in Dallas!

  • Ours is around $200 too. Am I weird for being excited to try it this time around?

Also, I got the more judgemental looks from my SIL when I told her about it but since I enjoy making her and my BIL feel uncomfortable I chalked it up to a win. Lol DH and my mom thinks it's awesome.

  • Mine is going to be $150, I think. I'm totally excited about it!

  • I plan on doing it too! I think it runs about $200 here as well. I need to add it to my list of things to get taken care of in the next few weeks. Most people around here don't even know what encapsulation is and since I like exposing people to new, unique and potentially uncomfortable topics, it should be interesting to see the reactions when I talk about it.
  • Doing it! Can't hurt and it's only $150 or so in my area. The smoothie idea was intriguing, but I can just see myself accidentally dropping bits on the floor...and with two dogs around....ew.
  • I'm going to do it as well. I think it will be closer to $300 for me because I want someone who will pick up the placenta from the hospital themselves and make the capsules in their home (far away from my nosy Rottweiler)

I don't find placenta encapsulation gross and I would actually consider it if my placenta wasn't made up of cookies, Mountain Dew, mcdonalds and chips.

HAHA I cant stop giggling at this.... mine is actually just straight carbs: bagels, tator tots, fries and caffeine. Maybe I SHOULD reconsider :)

Whatever about other peoples comments-- I just own it! If they have never dealt with depression- they would never understand either way!

  • I've been procrastinating looking into this! Once I heard it can help ward off PPD I was like I gotta research this and do it. I'm very worried about that. Does anyone have helpful links that educate about this? Or can suggest where I look to have it encapsulated?

  • no clue on the resources for evidence-based research, OR for local people to do it... sorry!  i would just google placenta encapsulation and the name of your city/state....  or even just google names f doulas in your area and send an email asking those individuals to recommend a placenta encapsulator.  if anyone would know, a local doula would know!
  • So I too am planning to do this...a few questions I have...Is anyone concerned about them doing it NOT in your house? My husband thinks Im nuts, and is like, don't have them do it at home (because hes disgusted by it, understood) but Im also scared if they don't do it in front of me, bc I will wonder if they are putting any additives in it.  anyone else?
  • DH is pretty grossed out by it, but he's OK with me doing whatever I want. It's $150-$200 here depending on how far away you are. They pick up from the hospital and deliver the pills to you. DH said that we definitely aren't telling people about it though.

I am considering it too. I've only been able to find two people in my area who do it- one charges 100$ for just the pills and the other charges between 140$ and 200$ for packages that include things like cord keepsakes and placenta creams. That is NMS so I would just be doing the pills. I guess my area is cheap!

I never knew I was such a hippie at heart until I had kids, lol.

  • the doula i had with my son will be doing the encapsulation for me this time, and i totally trust her.  i don't think i'd want to see her boiling or baking (or however it's done...  i really have no clue) my guts in my own kitchen.  i can't imagine the smell of cooking placenta is all that appealing :)

This exactly. SO thinks it's nasty, but doesn't care if I do it or not. SO said the same thing to keep it to myself lol.
