So this is my second pregnancy. My first pregnancy went perfect up until delivery, when our daughter eventually went into distress and when they tried to vaccuum her out and couldn't, I had to have an emergency C-Section. We moved shortly after having our first daughter so this doctor was new to us, and we haven't really liked him or the hospital from the start but there isn't too many options in this area. Anyway, the doctor told me from the beginning that just because I had a previous C-Section, i have to have another. We were pretty bummed about it, but with some of the health problems I've had in the past, I can understand why it might be a good idea.
This doctor hardly has anything to do with me, or the pregnancy. His nurses do everything and he basically comes in, says hi, checks the paper, then says "see ya next appointment." He doesn't do anything, no measuring or baby checkups at all. So he told us that since I have to have a C-Section, that he wants to do it a week before my due date. That made me uncomfortable so I asked if there was any chance to wait at least a little longer into my 39th week. My due date is April 4th, so after my husband and I got to thinking we though it'd be cool to see if we could have the baby on April 1st so she'd be an April Fool's Baby!!
But when we asked the doctor, he said that he wouldn't do it that day because it's a Tuesday, and on Tuesdays he works in his other clinic on the other side of town. He would do it the day before and the day after, but not that day because "that's for my convenience."
My husband is fed up with this doctor and so am I, and we both want to switch but I'm worried that it's a little late in the pregnancy. What do you ladies think?
Re: Switching Ob/Gyn...unreasonable or no?
If your feel uncomfortable switch. If he is doing the normal checks - heart rate etc I dont see what he is doing wrong. Some dont have the best bedside manners - some are cold etc. You switch based on how they feel. But switching because he wont deliver on the day you want is crazy. My practice has 7 doctors and if I pick a specific day of the week I have to go with the doctor that works at that "particular" hospital that day. I can't just go to any hospital either, I go to the one mine deliver at.

I kind of wondered if the whole switching doctors because you're upset about the due date was a little iffy, because it feels very picky. Sure it'd be neat, but yeah, i dunno if that's a decent enough reason to switch. And the C-Section at 39 weeks I wasn't sure about, because during my first pregnancy my doctor at that point said the it isn't full term unless it's 40 weeks, but I know things have changed in the last couple of years.
It's just that this doctor does not do any of the fetal checks, he hardly even talks to me. I get along with the nurses just fine because they are the ones that do the heart rate checks and feel and measure my stomach, but the doctor himself hasn't actually touched or done anything since my very first visit where he did the vaginal exam. He just doesn't seem like he gives a crap, all I am is another paycheck. I miss the doctor we had before we moved haha
Actually scheduled C-sections are typically scheduled at 39 weeks - 1 week prior to your due date because they don't want to risk you going into labor on your own. This will be my 3rd c/s - my first was an emergency, my 2nd was scheduled at exactly 39 weeks and this one is at 39 weeks, 1 day.
Switching OB's because he couldn't perform a c/s on your requested date is definitely unreasonable for reasons others have already stated but if you don't feel comfortable with him for other reasons than you can switch. I just switched OB's because I moved to another state so I had no choice but it can be done.
I get that he may be more impersonal then you'd like but at the same time it seems like you are more irrked that he isn't willing to do the c-section on the date you and DH had hoped for. I go in get weighed, pee in a cup, have the blood pressure done, she measures, listens to the heart and out I go. She will happily answer any questions or concerns I have if I
In my OB Practice, unless I schedule with her for a C-section or induction, knowing that is her rotation in the hospital, there is a 95% chance she WILL NOT be who delivers my child should I go into labor on my own.
Personally, you are 28/29 weeks along and have come this far... is really going to worth it to go through the hassle of switching at this point?
My Aunt works for the doctor's office that I was going to and she called me yesterday saying that she isn't supposed to say things like this, but that she was REALLY glad that I was trying to switch because my current Doctor has not been very good in the 25 years or so she has worked there. She recommended this new doctor and they are happily willing to take me this late in the pregnancy, so I already feel a little better.
I'm actually a little surprised because this new doctor is actually considering letting me try a VBAC because he can't find any significant medical reasons for me to need another C-Section, so I would definitely be happy with that. I was hoping for that in the first place but my original Doctor was saying that just because I had a C-Section before meant I had to have one again, just because it's their hospital policy. So hopefully this will work out for the best!
