Dress up clothes organization

How do you organize your kids dress up clothes? I have twin DD's so it seems to grow every holiday and birthday and its getting out of control. I currently have them in 2 larger baskets but its not working anymore. Any suggestions would be be great!

Re: Dress up clothes organization

  • Well, this won't work for most ppl but should you happen to have something like this or have a space where you could create it, we have a small closet under the stairs in our basement that I made a dress up room out of- I used a tension shower curtain rod and hung it nice & low for DD/DS and have everything hanger- appropriate (dresses, spider/batman costumes, shirts, etc) on that. Then on the side wall I mounted a 4 hook thing where they hang hats and other hangable things (cook apron, capes, etc) and then a big plastic bin for all other miscellaneous accessories (crowns, shoes, masks, etc).
I think you can get or make a little rod type thing knid of like they'd have in a store but small for kids to at least get those things out of the baskets, and then put a basket underneath? If you have a little wall space, the hooks are really helpful for pretty much anything you can hang too.

  • I installed a closet organizing system in her closet, so they hang up in her closet just like her regular clothes. I liked how this could grow with her (an extra rod for pants later). The accessories are in a basket that hangs beside her dress up clothes.

  • Like groovy I put a small tension rod perpendicular across DD's closet at her height. I have two baskets underneath the clothes for accessories like shoes and hats.

  • I repurposed a hutch from an old dresser. I bought a small tension rod to hang up the clothes and put a mirror in around DD's eye level. It has a shelf about a foot up so that is like the vanity table where all of her sunglasses sit.

  • I just organized ours and I'm pretty happy with it.  I put about ten command hooks in the corner of our playroom (five on each wall) and placed a basket underneath for shoes/hats/etc.  So far, so good!

I would love to have them in her closet or in a hutch but we just don't have the room.

  • My girls got a ton of dress up clothes for Christmas this year. I finally broke down and ordered this:

It hasn't arrived yet so I can't give any reviews. I'm hoping it will help to control the mess.

  • If it would work for you, you could make a corner of their bedroom a dress up station. Use a dowel rod and attach it catty-corner to the walls at a friendly height. Maybe a corner shelf mounted right above it for a jewelry box  and other treasures. Keep the baskets in use for shoes, crowns, etc underneath or beside it all. Hang one of those princess canopy drapes from the ceiling for changing and making a grand entrance.
  • We have a dress up trunk but it sounds like you own a lot more clothing than DD owns.
